Earth First! Summer Gathering

http://www.networkforclimateaction.org.uk/gathering_logo.jpg Ecological Direct Action without Compromise

5 days of workshops, skill sharing and planning action, plus low-impact living without leaders.

Meet people, learn skills, take action.

The Earth First! Summer Gathering, this year in Derbyshire, is the place where people involved in radical ecological direct action - or those who want to be involved - get together for five days of time and space to talk, walk, share skills, learn, play, rant, find out what's going on, find out what's next, live outside, strategise, hang out, incite, laugh and conspire.

Brighton's Anarchist Teapot are providing main meals and Veggies Catering Campaign will be co-ordinating the d-i-y cafe, a 'tuck shop' and, at 2pm daily, Vegan Cake Baking Workshops.

Other related workshops:

Thurdsay 2.30: Veganism: the ethical glue binding movements for social change. Is veganism simply the starting point for ethical and sustainable living, or an end in itself? Facilitated by Veggies

Friday 2.30pm: Food Politics & Vegan Mass Catering. A workshop with the Anarchist Teapot about the general politics around food & specific practicalities around vegan mass catering.

Friday 4.30: Campaign Networking for Humans, other Animals & the Environment. How can we build mutual support across seemingly diverse and disparate campaigns. What tools exist for networking and how do we encourage ourselves to make use of them? Facilitated by Veggies.

Saturday 12noon: UK Social Centres Network: networking between radical libertarian social centres of all types and descriptions.

Brinsley Animal Rescue Work Day

/img/arc/brinsleypigs.jpg Brinsley Animal Rescue is a not for profit organisation dedicated to caring for animals. Our primary mission is to relieve the suffering of animals and birds. Many of the animals that come to us are simply ’surplus to requirements’ from the meat, dairy and egg industry. Because such animals are deemed unprofitable then it is our aim to take them on and find them loving homes in which they can enjoy the retirement they deserve.

Nottm AR has regular work days here - fence building, staining, aviary building, mucking out, rabbit run building and more. Transport approx 6.30pm from City Centre - call Danny to confirm: 07593 375270. (Also possibly on Tuesdays from Beeston - call Lee 07599 282851)

Nottingham Greyhound Stadium Demo

http://www.greyhoundaction.org.uk/graphics/GAneedsYou/needButUp.jpg Regular demos fortnightly on Fridays from 6.30pm at the track, til approx 8pm.

Sadly, deaths and serious injuries to dogs running on the tracks are relatively common, and the existence of a major track like Nottingham is responsible for the putting to death of about 500 greyhounds every year. According to the Guardian, March 17th: "Greyhound tracks are closing and the industry isn't doing enough to care for the thousands of dogs who face an uncertain fate"

Nottingham Animal Rights have to educate people about the suffering of racing dogs, leafleting at Nottingham Greyhound Stadium, usually on alternate Friday evenings, from 6pm. If you live in or near the East Midlands area and would like to help, please email to confirm or call c/o 07870 861837.

Camp for Climate Action

http://www.climatecamp.org.uk/actions/edinburgh-2010/nmtb_promo_1.png The 2010 Camp For Climate Action is to be held in Edinburgh, focusing on the Royal Bank of Scotland. After receiving a wopping £45 billion bailout from the UK taxpayer, RBS is serving us another dose of injustice, funding climate crimes through their investment in oil, gas, coal and, more recently, Canadian tar sands.

Nottingham residents may participate in the camp as part of the Eastside "neighbourhood" which also included the good citizens of other Eastern parts of the country including Derby, Cambridge and Norfolk.

SWAT - Stop Wickham Animal Testing

/img/arc/09wickhamdemo.jpg Annual demonstration against Wickham laboratory to be held on Saturday 25 September 2010. Meet at mid-day in Mill Lane car-park in Wickham, Hampshire, PO17 5HY.

Wickham Research laboratory is currently being investigated by the Home Office for animal cruelty after a 8 month undercover operation by the BUAV, of which it is understood that the Home Office could soon reach its findings. Winchester City Council last year refused a planning application by Wickham labs to build new laboratories at Torbay Farm, Lower Upham, Hampshire, the laboratory has appealed against the refusal. It is now even more important to support this annual demonstration / protest to highlight the objections of the usage of the LD50 Test used within Wickham Research Laboratory.

Weekly demonstrations also continue outside Wickham labs.

Barry Horne Memorial Actions

http://barryhorne.org/images/barryhorne.jpg Let us know if you are organising events at local labs, or elsewhere, to commemorate Barry's death on November 5th 2001, and for the animals.

Please remember that 5th November is approaching, the 5th anniversary of the death in prison of fellow activist Barry Horne. Barry died in Long Lartin prison of liver failure, a direct result of three prison hunger strike protests against government policy on animal experiments.

To mark the day, please either organise an event or action dedicated to Barry, or dedicate your planned event or action to Barry's memory.

The event doesn't have to be connected with vivisection, Barry was an all round activist. He was a vegan, a hunt saboteur for many years, was convicted of trying to release a dolphin from an aquarium, attended demos against all forms of animal abuse.

Events and actions will be listed on the website.

World Day for the Abolition of Meat

http://www.nomoremeat.org/images/worlddayformeatabolition001006.jpg World Day for the Abolition of Meat is intended as a means of promoting the idea of abolishing the murder of animals for meat. Worldwide six million sentient beings are killed for their meat every hour! That figure doesn't even count sea animals, which of course are included in the demand for the abolition of meat. Meat consumption causes more suffering and death than any other human activity and is completely unnecessary.

Many groups will mobilize to promote the abolition of meat (and other animal products). They will not only advocate vegetarianism and veganism to individuals but will call for society to abandon the practice of killing animals for food. We hope that this initiative will strengthen the animal rights movement over the years. It is important to address people both as consumers and as citizens – like the anti-slavery activists who, although only a small minority, not only sought a boycott of sugar produced by slaves but also clearly expressed the idea that slavery should be banned. It is important today to question society as a whole about the murder of animals for meat so that it can no longer avoid a public debate on the legitimacy of this practice.

On 31 January conferences, street actions, leafleting and information stands will be organized to spread the idea that the consumption of meat cannot be justified ethically and should therefore be abolished – just as human slavery was in its time.

McLibel: Human Rights Victory Anniversary

/calendar/mclibel050215a.jpg Anniversary of 2005 McLibel victory at European Court of Human Rights

The European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg declared that the notorious and long running McLibel case was in breach of the right to a fair trial and right to freedom of expression, thereby voiding any solace that McNasty may have enjoyed from the trial.

The Court ruled that UK laws had failed to protect the public’s right to criticise massive corporations whose business practices can affect people’s lives, health and the environment.

Meanwhile after spending £10million to suppress free speach, McDonalds find that the most widely distributed protest leaflet ever, continues to be distributed worldwide...

World Day for Animals in Laboratories

World Day for Laboratory Animals is a United Nations recognized day of international commemoration of the suffering and killing of millions of innocent sentient beings in laboratories throughout the world.

Campaigning organisations in the UK and across the globe, will mark World Day for Laboratory Animals, a time to reflect upon the pain and suffering caused to millions of animals all in the name of a fraudulent scientific practice - a practice that is not only is so cruel to the animals so horribly abused and killed by vivisectors but a practice that so cruelly gives false hope to those with illness and disease.
