Nottingham Greyhound Demo

http://www.greyhoundaction.org.uk/graphics/GAneedsYou/needButUp.jpg Sadly, deaths and serious injuries to dogs running on the tracks are relatively common, and the existence of a major track like Nottingham is responsible for the putting to death of about 500 greyhounds every year. According to a Guardian article: "Greyhound tracks are closing and the industry isn't doing enough to care for the thousands of dogs who face an uncertain fate"

Demos continue fortnightly on Fridays. Now meeting at 5.30pm at the Market Square tram stop, with occasional bigger events at Nottingham Greyhound Stadium as on 26th April meeting at 6.30pm at the roundabout near the entrance.

Call 07703 031667 to confirm.

Greyhound Awareness Week

/img/arc/greyhounddemo.jpg Greyhound Awareness Week gives an opportunity for all those concerned about the plight of greyhounds to educate the public about the mass slaughter of dogs caused by the greyhound racing industry. With a large enough boycott by ordinary people, the industry can be brought to its knees and the suffering and untimely death of thousands of greyhounds prevented.

Anyone who would like to take part, please contact Action for Greyhounds for leaflets, posters, petition forms etc.

Street stalls and/or demos will be taking place throughout the country.
Please organise in your area.

Regular demos and campaigns are held in:

Animal Rescue Workday

http://www.kirkbypetwelfare.org/resources/base_images/rabbit/2900.jpg Kirkby Pet Welfare is a small animal shelter attempting to tackle the desperate task of rescuing and re-homing unwanted rabbits, hamsters and other small rodents, often bred indiscriminately by the pet trade.

Nottingham Animal Rights seeks volunteers for regular workdays. It is really rewarding work, because we can all do a little to make a big difference. The dogs at Pet Welfare are only walked once or twice a week so this is an easy and fun job that can make a positive impact on their lives. Transport may be available from Beeston or Nottingham - call Lee on 07599 282851.

London March to Close Down all Slaughterhouses

https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/484531_4814730572347_169920878_n.jpg It's time for us to call, loud and clear, for the abolition of animal slavery, for the abolition of all abuses suffered by animals in the course of their consumption by humans— for the end of their breeding, farming, fishing and slaughter.

Every year worldwide, 60 billion land animals and more than 1 trillion aquatic animals are abused and killed for unnecessary consumption— virtually 164 million land animals and 2.75 billion aquatic animals abused and killed every day.

On Saturday, June 15, 2013, be part of an historic international day to make that very call, for those very animals. Join us in a peaceful march, through the streets of London, to close down all slaughterhouses.

Compassionate citizens are mobilizing to engage communities in this movement. Paris, Toulouse,Toronto, Istanbul, Zagreb, Houston, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Bauru in Brazil are participating cities. Join one of the historic marches to close down all slaughterhouses, taking place worldwide.

McLibel: Anniversary Day of Action

/img/arc/mcdemolondon061001.jpg McLibel: Anniversary of 1997 High Court Victory!

The High Court ruled that McDonald's marketing has "pretended to a positive nutritional benefit which their food did not match"; that they "exploit children"; are "culpably responsible for animal cruelty" and "pay low wages".

The Appeal court added that it was fair comment that their employees worldwide "do badly in terms of pay and conditions", and true that "if one eats enough McDonald's food" this may well lead to "the very real risk of heart disease."

Nottingham Green Festival

/img/arc/nottmgreenfestlogo.jpg Due to problems beyond their control the Nottingham Green Festival has been postponed from the previously suggested 2nd June / 26th May date. The Nottingham Green Festival will probably now be held on Sunday 2nd September.

The event, now in its 22nd year, is independently organised by grass routes community based volunteers, with no statutory funding. The ethical standards and environmental / human / animal rights ethos of the event are long established, having evolved from the pre-history of the Nottm Peace Festival from which it has grown.

So if are able to run a fund-raiser, book a stall for your group, or encourage others to do so, that might make all the difference in ensuring the success of Nottingham's own green festival, the place for the whole family to learn, explore and try the latest in everything environmentally friendly and ethical, whilst also having lots of fun in the beautiful setting of the Arboretum Park, Waverley Street / Addison Street,

The conference is to be held at Centre Culturel Kulturfabrik Esch, Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxemburg.

National Anti-Shooting Week

http://www.animalaid.org.uk/images/pheasants.png National Anti-Shooting Week takes place towards the end of September, just before the start of the pheasant shooting season on 1 October.

Annually, more than 45 million pheasants and partridges are purpose-bred to be used as feathered targets. As part of the production process, hundreds of thousands of breeding birds are confined inside metal battery cages for their entire productive lives. Most of the released birds die before they can be shot – from disease, starvation, exposure, predation or under the wheels of cars. Of the shot birds, many will be discarded rather than eaten.

It is our aim to spread the word about the misery and cruelty involved in this industry and achieve a ban on the production of birds for ‘sport’ shooting in Britain. Read more at the Animal Aid website.

STOP THE BADGER CULL
Please sign the Petition posted by Brian May on the HM Government e-petition site on 07/09/2012. The target is to achieve 100,000 signatures as quickly as possible in order to request a debate in Parliament. The Petition can only be signed once, electronically. There is no equivalent paper petition. The fourth paragraph should read "The method of free shooting badgers could cause severe pain to many thousands of badgers." The missing word shown in italics was noticed too late for the text to be changed but should not affect the integrity of the petition.

Barry Horne Memorial Actions

http://barryhorne.org/images/barryhorne.jpg Let us know if you are organising events at local labs, or elsewhere, to commemorate Barry's death on November 5th 2001, and for the animals.

5th November is the anniversary of the death in prison of fellow activist Barry Horne. Barry died in Long Lartin prison of liver failure, a direct result of three prison hunger strike protests against government policy on animal experiments.

To mark the day, please either organise an event or action dedicated to Barry, or dedicate your planned event or action to Barry's memory.

The event doesn't have to be connected with vivisection, Barry was an all round activist. He was a vegan, a hunt saboteur for many years, was convicted of trying to release a dolphin from an aquarium, attended demos against all forms of animal abuse.

McLibel: Human Rights Victory Anniversary

/catalogu/mcleaflets.gif
In 2005 the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg declared that the infamous McLibel trial was in breach of the right to a fair trial and the right to freedom of expression, thereby voiding any solace that McNasty may have enjoyed from the trial.

The Court ruled that UK laws had failed to protect the public’s right to criticise massive corporations whose business practices can affect people’s lives, health and the environment.

Meanwhile after spending £10million to suppress free speech, McDonalds find that the most widely distributed protest leaflet continues to be distributed worldwide...

World Day for Animals in Laboratories

World Day for Laboratory Animals is a United Nations recognized day of international commemoration of the suffering and killing of millions of innocent sentient beings in laboratories throughout the world.

Campaigning organisations in the UK and across the globe, will mark World Day for Laboratory Animals, a time to reflect upon the pain and suffering caused to millions of animals all in the name of a fraudulent scientific practice - a practice that is not only is so cruel to the animals so horribly abused and killed by vivisectors but a practice that so cruelly gives false hope to those with illness and disease.
