NG7 Food Bank

http://sphotos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/527816_293758744070710_769348868_n.jpg The NG7 Food Bank distributes food parcels by referral ONLY on Fridays at 12pm noon. Clients need to be referred by one of the referral agencies: Nottingham Law Centre, St Ann’s Advice, Nottingham CAB, Age UK and the Meadows Advice Centre.

The NG7 Food Bank has always been very clear that food banks should not solely be about feeding people. Where possible we have also signposted and supported people wishing to challenge issues such as Benefit Sanctions, Bedroom Tax. Currently nearly half of NG7 food bank users are there due to benefit sanctions and delays in processing benefit claims.

We have supported a range of campaigns in the last year from NoToG4S (asylum seeker humanitarian housing) going to private firm G4S, Welfare reforms, Bedroom Tax, Payday loans. ...more....

Note that this is not a Sumac event so volunteers are asked to contact the co-ordinator first to find out the best way to help.

Details of other Food Banks around Nottingham may be found at the Hope Nottingham website

Animal Rescue Workday

Kirkby Pet Welfare is a small animal shelter attempting to tackle the desperate task of rescuing and re-homing unwanted rabbits, hamsters and other small rodents, often bred indiscriminately by the pet trade.

Nottingham Animal Rights seeks volunteers for regular workdays. It is really rewarding work, because we can all do a little to make a big difference. The dogs at Pet Welfare are only walked once or twice a week so this is an easy and fun job that can make a positive impact on their lives. Transport may be available from Beeston or Nottingham - call Lee on 07599 282851.

Sumac Community Food Garden

/sumac/images/survivegrowsharelearn.jpg The Sumac garden has been turned into mini community allotments! The vegetable beds are divided up in to small plots. Individuals and groups can request this space to grow fruit, vegetables, herbs, and flowers for local wildlife.

Local food production is an important part of a low carbon society. We want to encourage, support and learn about food growing in Forest Fields. Sumac's garden is organic and laid out to show the best use of a small space. It is full of ideas you could use to grow your own.

Contact fffgcmail@lists.aktivix.org if you are keen to get involved, or just pitch in on your own initiative.

Community Circle

http://inclusive-solutions.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/wall.jpg

In Nottingham we have a quiet revolution going on.

We have MakerSpaces, community focussed markets and gardens, food collectives, small shops, skills exchanges, fix-it stalls and swapshops. Alongside them we have the rise of homegrown slow food, baked bread made from organic flour from our windmill, bicycles and walking. Operating on a human scale together we are creating an earth-friendly economy and becoming the heart of healthy neighbourhood. These are direct challenges to the consumer society in its expansive earth damaging form.

NGcircle is part of this challenge. Together we demonstrate how magic can happen when we start talking, listening and trusting each other.

World Day for Animals in Laboratories

World Day for Laboratory Animals is a United Nations recognized day of international commemoration of the suffering and killing of millions of innocent sentient beings in laboratories throughout the world.

Campaigning organisations in the UK and across the globe, will mark World Day for Laboratory Animals, a time to reflect upon the pain and suffering caused to millions of animals all in the name of a fraudulent scientific practice - a practice that is not only is so cruel to the animals so horribly abused and killed by vivisectors but a practice that so cruelly gives false hope to those with illness and disease.

In 2015 the call is for local groups to join together in organising regional demos to mark World Day.

The High Court ruled that McDonald's marketing has "pretended to a positive nutritional benefit which their food did not match"; that they "exploit children"; are "culpably responsible for animal cruelty" and "pay low wages".

The Appeal court added that it was fair comment that their employees worldwide "do badly in terms of pay and conditions", and true that "if one eats enough McDonald's food" this may well lead to "the very real risk of heart disease."

At the Green Gathering you can rediscover ancient skills and explore pathways to future sustainability; talk with key speakers from the Green movement and engage in lively debate at the Green Forum venue.

Inform yourselves about current issues and causes with groups in the Campaigns area, which hopes to include a Co-ops Camp, co-ordinated by Radical Routes and Food by Veggies (subject to application).

As well as the campaigning, there's bands, djs, poets, comedians, magicians and mystics; Off Grid College; craft workshops, permaculture gardens, a tipi circle, campaign stalls, herbs & healing… kids, teens and youth spaces; interactive art and radical cinema; a stone circle and faerie glade...

Earth First Summer Gathering

http://earthfirstgathering.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/7/6/12767997/1341272288.png The Earth First! Summer Gathering is the place where people involved in radical ecological direct action - or those who want to be involved - get together for five days of time and space to talk, walk, share skills, learn, play, rant, find out what's going on, find out what's next, live outside, strategise, hang out, incite, laugh and conspire.

The workshops, networking and planning of actions at this low impact eco-living camp is organised non-hierarchically. It's run without leaders by everyone who comes along, so come prepared to chip in!

Veggies are (probably) providing a cafe space, tuck shop & vegan cake baking workshops.

Nottingham Green Festival (TBC)

/img/events/greenfest2005indymedia.jpg Proposed date for Nottm Green Festival, organised by grass routes community based volunteers, with no statutory funding.

Everything is subject to confirmation. The event is at an early stage of planning - your help would be most welcome. Come to the planning meeting on Sunday 11th January 2014. Contact us to confirm meeting time, or to join the mailing list.

Your support might make all the difference in ensuring the success of Nottingham's own green festival, the place for the whole family to learn, explore and try the latest in everything environmentally friendly and ethical, whilst also having lots of fun in the beautiful setting of the Arboretum Park, Waverley Street / Addison Street, a couple of minutes from Nottingham's Old Market Square.

This event has over 100 product, information and food stalls, kids rides, workshops, alternative therapies and technologies, live performers, entertainments throughout the park, live music bands performing from the bandstand and Veggies Catering nearby.
