Women's Conversation and English Language Improvement Classes

http://nottssos.files.wordpress.com/2011/03/esol_world.jpg There is a great need for English classes that are free and specifically intended for women only.

The classes will run for two hours a week, on Monday mornings, from 10 to 12. It is important that we have full on concentration and peace for those two hours. This means we would really appreciate not being disturbed.

One special and really nice thing (that is how we feel about it, at least) with our classes is the fact that we offer child-care for their children, so we really make it a lot easier for them to be able to come. These classes are the latest version of the ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes for women previously held at Sumac.

We would be very happy if anyone would like to volunteer, either as a teacher or as a child minder. Email Maja or contact via the Sumac Centre

Sumac Community Food Garden

/sumac/images/survivegrowsharelearn.jpg

Calling all gardeners and potential gardeners!

This spring the Sumac garden will be turned into mini community allotments! The current vegetable beds will be divided up in to small plots. Individuals and groups can request this space to grow fruit, vegetables, herbs, and flowers for local wildlife. The site will be launched following a big clear up in April.

Put it in your diary and come along every Wednesday evening in April from 5.30pm to kick start a year of abundance. Contact fffgcmail@lists.aktivix.org if you are keen to get involved.'

Meanwhile... The garden is planted with winter veg at the moment so beds are pretty sorted, but a general tidy up would be good. Any time you can spare to help with this community resource is greatly appreciated. Just pitch in on your own initiative.

Local food production is an important part of a low carbon society. We want to encourage, support and learn about food growing in Forest Fields. Sumac's garden is organic and laid out to show the best use of a small space. It is full of ideas you could use to grow your own.

Earth First Summer Gathering

The Earth First! Summer Gathering is the place where people involved in radical ecological direct action - or those who want to be involved - get together for five days of time and space to talk, walk, share skills, learn, play, rant, find out what's going on, find out what's next, live outside, strategise, hang out, incite, laugh and conspire.

The workshops, networking and planning of actions at this low impact eco-living camp is organised non-hierarchically. It's run without leaders by everyone who comes along, so come prepared to chip in!

The site is near Castle Cary (map shows general location, not the specific site).

Animal Rescue Workday

Kirkby Pet Welfare is a small animal shelter attempting to tackle the desperate task of rescuing and re-homing unwanted rabbits, hamsters and other small rodents, often bred indiscriminately by the pet trade.

Nottingham Animal Rights seeks volunteers for regular workdays. It is really rewarding work, because we can all do a little to make a big difference. The dogs at Pet Welfare are only walked once or twice a week so this is an easy and fun job that can make a positive impact on their lives. Transport may be available from Beeston or Nottingham - call Lee on 07599 282851.

Go veggie!

There are many reasons to go veggie including animal welfare, health, environmental protection and cost.

If you are concerned about one or more of these issues, why not take the opportunity to try some more meat-free meals during March or take the veggie challenge? Find support from veggie campaigners in your area from Veggies Networking Directory.

McLibel: Anniversary Day of Action

/img/arc/mcdemolondon061001.jpg McLibel: Anniversary of 1997 High Court Victory!

The High Court ruled that McDonald's marketing has "pretended to a positive nutritional benefit which their food did not match"; that they "exploit children"; are "culpably responsible for animal cruelty" and "pay low wages".

The Appeal court added that it was fair comment that their employees worldwide "do badly in terms of pay and conditions", and true that "if one eats enough McDonald's food" this may well lead to "the very real risk of heart disease."
