Any time you can spare to help build this community resource is greatly appreciated. Your chance to get involved with exciting urban food project! We want to encourage, support and learn about food growing in Forest Fields. Drop in and help with the Sumac garden or discuss your growing needs.

Sumac Skill Share

The Sumac Skill Share is back, and this time it’s three times a week.

In collaboration with the Nottingham Free School, the Sumac Skill Share collective is taking Skill Shares to the Square Centre, and adding a weekly 'Idea Share' on Wednesdays at Sumac into the mix.

These workshops are all run for free by volunteers from our community. Our aim is to build the confidence and skills of people in our community by sharing the skills we already have. It also aims to prepare us for dealing with climate change and peak oil. If you have any skills you could share, or something you would like to learn, get in touch.

The sessions run from 2pm-5pm, at the Sumac Centre on Saturdays and on Sundays at Square Centre, Alfred St. N., Nottingham NG3 1AA (Feb 7th at the Poacher). A creche will be provided, please let us know by email how many kids you are bringing.

We are all home-educating families: our children are currently aged between 4 and 10 years.

Our group meets at the Sumac centre every two weeks. We arrange blocks of eight sessions at a time. The themes and activities are decided by children in advance, and we all contribute in some way. We also arrange outdoor trips. At the end of our 8 sessions, we have two 'open' weeks where families can come and see what we do and whether you want to join / go on our waiting list!

McLibel: Human Rights Victory Anniversary

/calendar/mclibel050215a.jpg Anniversary of 2005 McLibel victory at European Court of Human Rights

The European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg declared that the notorious and long running McLibel case was in breach of the right to a fair trial and right to freedom of expression, thereby voiding any solace that McNasty may have enjoyed from the trial.

The Court ruled that UK laws had failed to protect the public’s right to criticise massive corporations whose business practices can affect people’s lives, health and the environment.

Meanwhile after spending £10million to suppress free speach, McDonalds find that the most widely distributed protest leaflet ever, continues to be distributed worldwide...

Brinsley Animal Rescue Work Day

/img/arc/brinsleypigs.jpg Brinsley Animal Rescue is a not for profit organisation dedicated to caring for animals. Our primary mission is to relieve the suffering of animals and birds. Many of the animals that come to us are simply ’surplus to requirements’ from the meat, dairy and egg industry. Because such animals are deemed unprofitable then it is our aim to take them on and find them loving homes in which they can enjoy the retirement they deserve.

Nottm AR has regular work days here - fence building, staining, aviary building, mucking out, rabbit run building and more. Transport approx 6.30pm from City Centre - call Danny to confirm: 07593 375270. (Also possibly on Tuesdays from Beeston - call Lee 07599 282851)

Nottingham Greyhound Stadium Demo

http://www.greyhoundaction.org.uk/graphics/GAneedsYou/needButUp.jpg Sadly, deaths and serious injuries to dogs running on the tracks are relatively common, and the existence of a major track like Nottingham is responsible for the putting to death of about 500 greyhounds every year. According to the pro-racing greyhoundscene internet forum, Unleash Castro, a 21 months old greyhound, collapsed and died after winning a race on April 11th 2009 at Nottingham.

Nottingham Animal Rights have to educate people about the suffering of racing dogs, leafleting at Nottingham Greyhound Stadium, usually on alternate Friday evenings, from 6.30pm. • Do have or know of a large storage space being underused?
  • Do you have skills or want to develop skills relating to logistics and campaigning?
  • Can you eat Veggies Cake!
If any of these questions apply to you, talk to the AT Co-op.

Individuals in the collective have years of experience in organising large scale events. We want to share these skills and create an equipment resource to help reduce the work load of individuals, and keep equipment within our networks.

There will be a free AT Co-op training week in Nottingham, starting on the first weekend in May 2010.

This will include putting up marquees, mending the flat pack toilets and painting them for beauty and durability, as well as all the technical and theoretical (power, plumbing etc) skillsharing that launched the excellent site crew for the 2009 Blackheath camp.

Vegan Beer Festival

Roll Up Roll Up for the Great Vegan Beer Festival!

Load of vegan beers. Our beers contain no fish!'

Did you know that many beers, including most 'real' ales are made using isinglass, an a additive made from the swim bladders of sturgeons?

Wines often use dried blood or egg albumen as finings.

Finings are used to speed up the settling of sediment, a process that works perfectly well with the addition instead of a little more time!

For example The Marble Brewery, a small brewery in Manchester, makes cask ale from only organic and vegetarian ingredients, and ales from Sam Smiths, established in 1758, are always vegan (and available at the Sumac Centre).

Rainbow Centre 25th Anniversary

/moving/oldrainb.jpg sumac/images/dovelogo.gifNottingham's Rainbow Centre opened at 180 Mansfield Road on 9th September 1985, the co-operative having been established (on 9th April 1984) by campaigners for peace, animal rights, human rights, civil liberties and the environment.

Veggies Catering Campaign (established 18th October 1984) moved in from Earthwise (the FoE Shop next door) when it closed, later taking on the day-to-day running of the centre.

From the Rainbow Centre base plans were hatched for the purchase of a permanent campaign base, which was opened as the Sumac Centre, in Forest Fields/New Basford on June 22nd 2002.

What's Still Wrong With McDonalds

The very first London Greenpeace anti-McD day of Action was on 19 Jan 1985 and soon became a global phenomenon!

There will be a Free Vegan Food Give-away event in Nottingham and pickets in London and elsewhere. Join us, or better still Adopt-YOUR-Store - get leaflets from Veggies or Do-It-Yourself.

Protest against everything that's wrong with McDonald's - animal cruelty, exploitation of workers, damaging the planet, promoting unhealthy food, marketing to young children and much more. For a summary of the issues surrounding the McLibel Case see the European Court of Human Rights ruling at http://www.mcspotlight.org/case/trial/verdict/Echr.htm
