Animal Rescue Workday

Kirkby Pet Welfare is a small animal shelter attempting to tackle the desperate task of rescuing and re-homing unwanted rabbits, hamsters and other small rodents, often bred indiscriminately by the pet trade.

Nottingham Animal Rights seeks volunteers for regular workdays. It is really rewarding work, because we can all do a little to make a big difference. The dogs at Pet Welfare are only walked once or twice a week so this is an easy and fun job that can make a positive impact on their lives. Transport may be available from Beeston or Nottingham - call Lee on 07599 282851.

Sumac Community Food Garden

/sumac/images/survivegrowsharelearn.jpg The Sumac garden has been turned into mini community allotments! The vegetable beds are divided up in to small plots. Individuals and groups can request this space to grow fruit, vegetables, herbs, and flowers for local wildlife.

Local food production is an important part of a low carbon society. We want to encourage, support and learn about food growing in Forest Fields. Sumac's garden is organic and laid out to show the best use of a small space. It is full of ideas you could use to grow your own.

Contact fffgcmail@lists.aktivix.org if you are keen to get involved, or just pitch in on your own initiative.

Community Circle

http://inclusive-solutions.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/wall.jpg

In Nottingham we have a quiet revolution going on.

Note that his time the Circle is on a Social Club bar night, so club members and guests are welcome to join the Circle throughout the evening, and note that the bar will open at 9.30pm.

We have maker spaces, community focussed markets and gardens, food collectives, small shops, skills exchanges, fix-it stalls and swapshops. Alongside them we have the rise of homegrown slow food, baked bread made from organic flour from our windmill, bicycles and walking. Operating on a human scale together we are creating an earth-friendly economy and becoming the heart of healthy neighbourhood. These are direct challenges to the consumer society in its expansive earth damaging form.

NGcircle is part of this challenge. Together we demonstrate how magic can happen when we start talking, listening and trusting each other.

Social Centres Gathering

A gathering for people involved or interested in setting up social centres of all types, at the Sumac on the weekend of the 8th/9th of November.

"Across Britain, political activists are buying, renting or squatting run-down, disused buildings in city centres and turning them into vibrant, volunteer-run spaces called 'social centres'. With free or cheap food, regular film and gig nights, political meeting spaces, libraries, free shops and independent media groups, social centres are rapidly becoming a key part of the anti-capitalist struggle."

McLibel: Anniversary Day of Action

/img/arc/mcdemolondon061001.jpg McLibel: Anniversary of 1997 High Court Victory!

The High Court ruled that McDonald's marketing has "pretended to a positive nutritional benefit which their food did not match"; that they "exploit children"; are "culpably responsible for animal cruelty" and "pay low wages".

The Appeal court added that it was fair comment that their employees worldwide "do badly in terms of pay and conditions", and true that "if one eats enough McDonald's food" this may well lead to "the very real risk of heart disease."
