Sunday Sumac Club / Cafe

/sumac/images/breakfastralph300.jpg Every Sunday from 10am until 4pm Sumac becomes a space to join in with various small jobs and projects around the Centre and within the local community, including the occasional Skillshare. Cafe open from 11am until 1pm ever popular Sunday Brunch.

Instead of staying at home on Sundays come to the Sumac where we can switch the heating on, eat sausages, chat, and do whatever it is we do on a Sunday but in a room with lots of other people.

Use it as an opportunity to regularly do general campaign work (including banners etc) and cross-pollinate with others using the space in a similar way. It's also a good time to get small working parties together to do odd jobs and maintenance around Sumac.

Sumac Community Food Garden

/sumac/images/survivegrowsharelearn.jpg Local food production is an important part of a low carbon society. We want to encourage, support and learn about food growing in Forest Fields. Sumac's garden is organic and laid out to show the best use of a small space. It is full of ideas you could use in your own garden.

The garden is planted with winter veg at the moment so beds are pretty sorted, but a general tidy up would be good. Any time you can spare to help with this community resource is greatly appreciated. Just pitch in on your own initiative or contact us to check session times.

ESOL classes for women

http://nottssos.files.wordpress.com/2011/03/esol_world.jpg ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes for women are held at the Sumac on Mondays. There is a great need for English classes that are free and specifically intended for women only.

The classes will run for two hours a week, on Monday mornings, from 10 to 12. It is important that we have full on concentration and peace for those two hours. This means we would really appreciate not being disturbed.

One special and really nice thing (that is how we feel about it, at least) with our classes is the fact that we offer child-care for their children, so we really make it a lot easier for them to be able to come.

We would be very happy if anyone would like to volunteer, either as a teacher or as a child minder. Email Maja or contact via the Sumac Centre

Community Circle

http://www.inclusive-solutions.com/images/wall.JPG

It's so simple... We meet once a month at the Sumac Centre, share some food and talk to each other. Then we form a circle and introduce ourselves with an emphasis on being positive together.

People are invited to think about what they need and what they might have to offer.

All kinds of things have been asked for: requests for assistance with proof reading, help with getting the decorating done and advice on stress management. Bring and share items gifted have included an assortment of clothes, hair products, a set of fruit tree posters and an empty coffee jar!

We are trying to allow a space for everyone to be comfortable, so if you wish to come for the first part, socialising with a bit of food and a cuppa, that runs from around 6.45. Or if you feel more comfortable coming later for the go-round of needs, wants, and offers, then that starts around 7.30.

Nottingham Greyhound Demo

http://www.greyhoundaction.org.uk/graphics/GAneedsYou/needButUp.jpg Sadly, deaths and serious injuries to dogs running on the tracks are relatively common, and the existence of a major track like Nottingham is responsible for the putting to death of about 500 greyhounds every year. According to a Guardian article: "Greyhound tracks are closing and the industry isn't doing enough to care for the thousands of dogs who face an uncertain fate"

Demos continue fortnightly on Fridays. Now meeting at 5.30pm at the Market Square tram stop, with occasional bigger events at Nottingham Greyhound Stadium as on 26th April meeting at 6.30pm at the roundabout near the entrance.

Animal Rescue Workday

http://www.kirkbypetwelfare.org/resources/base_images/rabbit/2900.jpg Kirkby Pet Welfare is a small animal shelter attempting to tackle the desperate task of rescuing and re-homing unwanted rabbits, hamsters and other small rodents, often bred indiscriminately by the pet trade.

Nottingham Animal Rights seeks volunteers for regular workdays. It is really rewarding work, because we can all do a little to make a big difference. The dogs at Pet Welfare are only walked once or twice a week so this is an easy and fun job that can make a positive impact on their lives. No Dash for Gas Protest Camp

http://www.schnews.org.uk/images/830-Gas-vlge.jpg No Dash for Gas: 4 day camp & protest at West Burton Power Station.

Last October, 21 environmental activists shut down EDF's West Burton power station for a week in protest at the government's Dash for Gas. West Burton is the first of up to 40 new gas fired power stations being planned. With your help, including a solidarity petition signed by 64,000 people - they fought off EDF's attempt to sue them for £5 million.

This summer, inspired by their action, we are building a wide coalition of groups and individuals who will be coming together to Reclaim the Power. Want to be part of creating Reclaim The Power? Wondering where we'll be, how you can get there or what you need to bring? More info to come soon, keep up to date at http://www.nodashforgas.org.uk

Nottingham Green Festival

/img/arc/nottmgreenfestlogo.jpg Due to problems beyond their control the Nottingham Green Festival has been postponed from the previously suggested 2nd June / 26th May date. The Nottingham Green Festival will probably now be held on Sunday 1st September.

The event, now in its 22nd year, is independently organised by grass routes community based volunteers, with no statutory funding. The ethical standards and environmental / human / animal rights ethos of the event are long established, having evolved from the pre-history of the Nottm Peace Festival from which it has grown.

So if are able to run a fund-raiser, book a stall for your group, or encourage others to do so, that might make all the difference in ensuring the success of Nottingham's own green festival, the place for the whole family to learn, explore and try the latest in everything environmentally friendly and ethical, whilst also having lots of fun in the beautiful setting of the Arboretum Park, Waverley Street / Addison Street,

National Badger Day

http://www.badger.org.uk/images/badgerBottom.jpg Each year the National Federation of Badger Groups (NFBG) helps thousands of badgers in Britain. You can help badgers too, by organising or taking part in an event to raise funds for, or awareness of, the NFBG on or around National Badger Day.

STOP THE BADGER CULL
Please sign the Petition posted by Brian May on the HM Government e-petition site on 07/09/2012. The target is to achieve 100,000 signatures as quickly as possible in order to request a debate in Parliament. The Petition can only be signed once, electronically. There is no equivalent paper petition. The fourth paragraph should read "The method of free shooting badgers could cause severe pain to many thousands of badgers." The missing word shown in italics was noticed too late for the text to be changed but should not affect the integrity of the petition.

McLibel: Human Rights Victory Anniversary

/catalogu/mcleaflets.gif
In 2005 the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg declared that the infamous McLibel trial was in breach of the right to a fair trial and the right to freedom of expression, thereby voiding any solace that McNasty may have enjoyed from the trial.

The Court ruled that UK laws had failed to protect the public’s right to criticise massive corporations whose business practices can affect people’s lives, health and the environment.

Meanwhile after spending £10million to suppress free speech, McDonalds find that the most widely distributed protest leaflet continues to be distributed worldwide...
