Farm Animal Sanctuary Appeal - May 18th 2001

Sanctuaries at Risk . Get Involved . Legal Background

Animal Sanctuaries with pigs, goats, sheep, cattle, horses, wildlife and other rescued animals may be threatened with the killing of the animals in their care if neighbouring farmland is found to be contaminated.

Despite ministry vets having no automatic legal right to kill without the owners permission, police are reported to have conspired with MAFF to distract a reluctant owner whilst forcing entry to a locked shed to kill the rescued goat in their care.

After loosing a court appeal the police, MAFF and the Ghurkas broke into Carolyn Hoffe's home to murder her five pet sheep. Details here.

Mossburn Animal Centre in Dumfries recently held off a threat to kill their 14 rescued goats and 3 sheep, forcing an 11-hour u-turn by the Scottish Executive . Details here

Sanctuaries at risk

Other farm animal sanctuaries will be threatened with compulsory slaughter of their healthy rescued animals, in the event of the alledged risk of foot and mouth disease at neighbouring farms.

Currently in Devon and Cumbria there is a policy of killing all animals within a two mile radius of suspected cases. For the rest of the country it is half mile radius. If the Devon and Cumbria policy is extended nationally this will result in the slaughter of rescued animals on this, and other sanctuaries. This must be and can be prevented with your support, especially as rescued animals are not intended to be moved, nor put into the food chain.

GET INVOLVED

'ASK', a network 'Against Sanctuary Killing' is growing, with support having been gathered by Veggies, Farplace Animal Rescue and many other groups.

The extensive internet capabilities of the Animal Contacts Directory has enabled emails to be targeted to a vaste range of animal-friendly contacts in specific parts of the country and more phone numbers were drawn from the Directory than we have able to call at this time.

We know that you are Against Sanctuary Killing - can we 'ASK' for your future support - you can help where-ever you are.

- If you are willing to travel when animal sanctuaries ASK for support, email your name, location, phone number and email address to ask@veggies.org.uk

- If you can call on friends, family, groups members or supporters in other parts of the country ask@veggies.org.uk to go on the email list.

- A sanctuary may receive as little as 8 hours notice of MAFF's visit to kill their animals, we physically cannot phone all the people on our lists in that time. Can we ASK you to receive by email a list of phone numbers to call when the time comes ask@veggies.org.uk to help where you are unble to travel yourself?

- If you have rescued animals, promising them sanctuary from the slaughterhouse for all their lives, and you feel threatened by the MAFFia, just 'ASK' for help.

- if you have media contacts forward these details to them, (nb you may have received emails from others that included in the "to:" list someone else's media email contacts - use them!)

- If you have an email mailing list, please can we ASK you to forward this message to everyone in your address book.

To ensure that we have the correct details for any group that you are involved with, check the entry in the Animal Contacts Directory at http://www.veggies.org.uk/acd - halfway down that page there is a GroupFinder search facility, and a response form.
Info for the Directory should be addressed to acd@veggies.org.uk

Not since Thomas A'Beckett has the concept of 'Sanctuary' been so abused by the state. If you are Against Sanctuary Killings can we ASK you to act now!

Legal Background

Guidance of the legal position, which is being flouted by MAFF vets, was well set out on the website of Sheepdrove Organic Farm:
http://www.sheepdrove.com but it seems to be temporarily off-line. However some of the content has been saved into this Word Document

Meanwhile, here is a useful report from the Electronic Telegraph: Legal Loophole Saves 100 Herds
