    1. Cancel the Cruel Circus : Leicester
      6:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Circus placard The great british circus cancelled as site is waterlogged. Alternate field is a mudbath. If conditions are too atrocious for the public, how are the animals suffering?

They may attempt to open later at Leicester Road, Glen Parva on the A426, with a protest planned from 6pm and at other times – see entry on the current AR Calendar.

This circus have many animals including lions, zebras, camels, llamas, horses, ponies, goats and reindeer, and now 3 elephants and a white tiger. Animals in circuses lead a pathetic, miserable existence, performing unnatural, demeaning tricks in the ring and tied up or caged between performances. Their home is nothing more than a mobile prison.

To support protests call 07773 912535 or 07854 735 026 or c/o the AR Calendar. Take care – a circus worker assaulted a protester in Nottingham in 2010.

    1. Autonomous Kids Project
      2:30 pm – 6:30 pm

street play posterAutonomous Nottingham presents six weeks of street play in Forest Fields.

One of the key principals to Autonomous Nottingham is engagement with it’s community, another is an effort to show solidarity to those who are marginalised by the state and capitalism. We also believe in unlearning the spirit crushing atomization and individualization of everyday life, and the relearning of loving, sharing and coming together within shared spaces.

It’s with these ideas in mind that some of us have decided to once more take to the streets to play with the local kids. We will be running six play sessions to start with, on Thursdays between 4:30 and 6:30. And perhaps we’ll do some more after that.

We invite people to come and join us on Cedar Road – if you’ve got kids bring them, if you just want to play then bring yourself.

    1. Forest Fields Food Gardening Club
      5:00 pm – 5:00 pm

sumac gardenThe Forest Fields Food Gardening Club is in session again, currently on Mondays from 5pm at Sumac’s garden, which is organic and laid out to show the best use of a small space. It is full of ideas you could use in your own garden.

We can share seedings and materials. Local food production is an important part of a low carbon society.

Any time you can spare to help build this community resource is greatly appreciated. Your chance to get involved with exciting urban food project! We want to encourage, support and learn about food growing in Forest Fields. Drop in and help with the Sumac garden or discuss your growing needs.

See “Sumac Garden Project” photo report at Notts Indymedia.

The Sumac Garden has been much improved, with more asphalt being dug up and ‘raised beds’ have been built. Many, many pots and seeds planted in the new poly greenhouse.

Volunteers have obviously put in the hours here. The objective, not just to grow food for the Sumac itself ….. but also to provide a positive example on what can be achieved in quite modest urban surroundings.

With the recession in full swing more and more people are growing their own fruit and vegetables but what if you don’t have a garden or even a backyard?

See how to grow fruit and vegetables in containers at these weekly gardening sessions at the Sumac Centre. All welcome to learn, practice or help with organic, permaculture gardening.

Directions and contact details are at the Sumac Centre Website

Forest Fields Orchard had 100 fruit trees to plant in Forest Fields in 2009.

MCL LogoWe are grateful to the late Kathleen Jannaway and the the Movement for Compassionate Living for the initial funding to establish the garden.

      MCL’s aims:

      1. To spread the vegan message and promote simple living and self-reliance as a remedy against the exploitation of humans, animals and the Earth.
      2. To promote the use of trees and vegan-organic farming to meet the needs of society for food and natural resources.
      3. To promote a land-based society where as much of our food and resources as possible are produced locally.

Other useful information is available from the Vegan Organic Network.

Vegan-organics is any system of cultivation that avoids artificial chemicals and sprays, livestock manures and animal remains from slaughter houses, with fertility maintained by vegetable compost, green manures, crop rotation, mulches, and any other method that is sustainable, ecologically viable and not dependent upon animal exploitation. …more…

    1. Community Circle
      6:45 pm – 9:15 pm

Community Circle ArtworkIt’s so simple… We meet once a month, share some food, talk to each other. Then we form a circle and introduce ourselves with an emphasis on being positive together. People are invited to think about what they need and what they might have to offer.

All kinds of things have been asked for: baby clothes, help with finding a tradesperson, advice on sorting out benefits, someone to talk to, help cleaning out a shed etc. The need is spoken with no expectation of it being fulfilled. People in the circle respond if they feel it. Then people go around again and make offers, something they would like to share with no expectation of it being accepted.

We are trying to allow a space for everyone to be comfortable, so if you wish to come for the first part, socialising with a bit of food and a cuppa, that runs from around 6.45. Or if you feel more comfortable coming later for the go-round of needs, wants, and offers, then that starts around 7.30.

Community Circle Web of SupportA wide range of things have been offered: guitar lessons, help with getting funding, carwashing etc, etc.

All the requests and connections are beautifully drawn up onto a big sheet of paper.

Afterwards, people check in with those who responded to the gifts/needs/wishes to make arrangements! (Bring your diaries!)

These circles are of immediate benefit to long term unemployed, disabled and those with other challenging issues affecting their inclusion in mainstream society as well as to those committed.

It is also of benefit to those who are committed to doing something about the issues confronted by people so often excluded, by offering a clear opportunity for contribution.

By gathering allies and participants to share wants needs and offers new possibilities for reciprocal relationships evolve.

Community circles build the capacity of ordinary unpaid community members to be involved in making the UK a safer, friendlier, and more supportive community for all its members.

By engaging “consumers” and the community at large in this way, we strive to build a national community where all of us have enough money, healthy relationships, and a sense of purpose and meaning.

      12:00 pm – 12:00 pm

GM Action logoBakers, farmers, growers, allotment holders, scientists, beekeepers, and people who eat food are turning out to voice their opposition to GM crops coming back to the UK.

There is to be a public mass action against the Rothamsted genetically modified wheat trial on Sunday 27th May 2012, 12noon at Rothamsted, Harpenden, Hertfordshire.

Rothamsted Research Centre has been given the go-ahead by the government to trial aphid-resistant wheat in the open air. Permission has been given for planting this Spring and in Spring 2013. £1.28 million of public money has gone into creating a crop modified to secrete a hormonal chemical compound which acts an alarm signal to keep aphids away and attracts aphid predators to the crop.

What we want from the sumac website:

      - To make it easier for people to get involved
      - To make it easier to see events are hapenning at the Sumac
      - To tell people who we are, what we do and what our values are
      - To link in with the collectives who are based at the sumac
      - A central place where sumac projects can recruit and communicate with volunteers

      - To sync together info about sumac events that exists in reality (i.e. diaries in the centre) with the same info online
      - To be simple to use
      - To increase the communication with people who cant actually make it to the Sumac
      - To be transparent (but also aware of the need for confidentiality at time

      - To not replicate what already exists, or what Indymedia is for
      - To sync together the website with other online communities connected to the centre (such as Facebook)
      - To be mindful of the ethics of online tools, and open source as much as possible

      Issues raised

      - Being mindful of duplicating what already exists. A lot of what we want may already be avaialble on the current site, but the current site uses programming language that is complicated and few people have the skills to update it, so..

      - It needs to be simpe to use. Possibly something ike wordpress

      - Discussion of the necessity or not of having one primary diary, between paper and online versions. Also, the possibility of phasing out the paper diaries and eventually replacing them with a computer diary in the centre

      - being mindful of what we can expect a website to achieve, and being realistic about this. It isnt going to solve all the issues of the Sumac and have the centre packed to the gills with people

      - Mindful that there is a fair amount of energy to work on the website and maintain in at the moment.

Ideas for the front page of the site:

      - Picture of the building
      - Introduction to the centre
      - Contact details
      - Map
      - News and/or events feed
      - Links to collectives in the centre

    1. Nottingham Green Festival
      10:00 am – 4:00 pm

Green Festival 2011 at IndymediaVeggies will be catering at the 21st Nottingham Green Festival, which will be held at Arboretum Park (Waverley Street/Addison Street), a little later in the year than usual.

Nottingham’s only green event, now running annually for over 2 decades, is the traditional start of our summer season.

With our environment and changing weather on everyone’s lips, Nottingham’s own green festival is the place for the whole family to learn, explore and try the latest in everything environmentally friendly and ethical whilst also having lots of fun in the beautiful setting of the Arboretum Park.

This event has over 100 product, information and food stalls, kids rides, workshops, alternative therapies and technologies, live performers, entertainments throughout the park, live music bands performing from the bandstand and Veggies Catering nearby.

The Green Festival aims to provide a family event aimed at our whole community. Immerse them in a wholly natural atmosphere of live music and dance, re-cycled arts and nature themed workshops, organic & natural food and local allotment and plant stalls. Also natural cosmetics and fair trade and wildlife stalls, alternative energy and natural health.

A multitude of stalls with expertise and information sharing, to raise awareness and encourage ethical living and friendliness and a greater understanding towards our threatened environment.

Live music and entertainment at the Bandstand has been organised by Sweetpotato Promotions. We hope to provide:

      Other possible campaign spaces:

Let us know if you are running a like-minded stall at this event.

We therefore need LOTS of help

Please contact us with your name & phone no and let us know any thing extra you can provide, eg transport, structures, entertainment and any particular area of interest.

      Veggies Climate Change Campaigns

To get to this event, 1.4 miles from our Sumac Centre base, Veggies may emit approx 2kg CO2.  However by helping an estimated 600 people Eat Vegan we will “offset” 1200 kg CO2.

If ONE customer goes Vegan For Life, they will save 1.5 tonnes CO2 every year, as well as saving 4022 animals lives, and enabling all the world’s peoples to receive a Fair Share of the world’s resources. [carbon calculation references]

sumac gardenThe Forest Fields Food Gardening Club is in session again, currently on Mondays from 5pm at Sumac’s garden, which is organic and laid out to show the best use of a small space.

As they say in their Food & Drink info: “this is a dead-animal-free festival. Respect your neighbours, don’t eat them” and “Veggies awesome food will be here with the best veggie burgers, flap jacks, chocolate brownies and tea in the World (as well as a bunch of other stuff)”.

      MCL’s aims:

…more…
