Mad Pride is committed to ending discrimination against psychiatric patients and challenging negative assumptions about 'madness'. Rather than medicalising it, we see 'madness' as a product of the shit society that we live in. Rather than try to fit into 'normality', which is a materialistic, sheep-like concept, we are trying to create alternatives. Where's SANITY got us anyhow??

Mad Pride Nottingham group plans to challenge people's assuptions about madness.

Sat 1st : Rememberance of Jill Phipps - Dover Rally

Food and Travel from Nottingham with Veggies.

Demo Report from Farmed Animal Action

Hundreds of protestors from across the country descended on Dover Docks on Saturday February 1st to remember Jill Phipps who was tragically killed in 1995 whilst protesting against live exports in Coventry. Protestors arrived and immediately stormed the main terminal at Dover Docks.

Then followed impassioned speeches by Angie Petro, a message from Robin Webb, John Curtin, Nancy Phipps and Mel Broughton, who stood in for Keith Mann who unfortunately could not make it. Protestors learnt about the continuation of live exports through Dover and why it is so important to work together to end this filthy trade. The clear message from the day was let us not let this trade gain momentum - JILL DID NOT DIE IN VAIN - WE CAN AND WILL WIN, BUT WE CAN'T DO IT WITHOUT YOU!

A march to the Eastern Docks roundabout led to laying of tributes to Jill and was followed by a mass demo which blocked the main road leading to the port for around an hour sending a clear message to Dover Harbour Board that live exports have not been forgotten and protests like the one on Saturday will now become a regular occurrence in Dover. Live exports from Plymouth, Coventry, Brightlingsea and Shoreham stopped because people said enough is enough. Dover harbour board could easily make it difficult for exporters to ply their vile trade by increasing harbour fees and rigorously enforcing animal welfare regulations. Instead, they allow clearly ill animals to pass through the docks and aid and abet those who make their money from the suffering of animals. So now its time to let Dover Harbour Board know exactly how you feel about the live export trade and their role in it.

Please write, phone, email, fax them with your disgust. They have already expressed their displeasure at concerned people phoning about live exports as it stops them conducting their normal business, so keep it up!

Saturday 15th : Don't Attack Iraq! National March against War

Coaches from Nottingham for a march to Hyde Park for a rally. Food from Veggies on 20 of the Nottingham Coaches!

  • Within a matter of a few weeks Britain and the USA will almost certainly be attacking Iraq. When it happens an overwhelming degree of lethal force will be used - more than 3,000 bombs and missiles in the first 48 hours alone. We shall hear a lot in due course about so-called 'precision-guided' or 'smart' weapons - as we did during the 1991 Gulf War, but such weapons still kill indiscriminately. 50,000 to 80,000 Iraqis died in that war; men women and children blown to pieces.

  • Animals are the forgotten victims of war. They are never reported or even mentioned in the casualty figures, despite the fact that the numbers killed must far outweigh the human dead. War is not only an assault on people, it is an assault on the whole of nature, on the fragile ecosystems that all living beings require for their survival.

  • Moreover, even before wars are fought, animals are the victims of weapons' research. In places like the top-secret Ministry of Defence laboratory in Wiltshire, Porton Down, animals are routinely used in experiments to develop more lethal and efficient weapons of mass destruction.

Mon 14th - Sat 19th : Protest against Peat Cutting

A week of action against the Peat Industry in the run up to the Easter Bank Holiday, to target and disrupt it at its busiest time.

Thorne and Hatfield Moors are the largest remaining lowland peat habitats in England. But this is not enough to stop them being ravaged by US multinational Scotts, extracting millions of tons of peat to sell to garden centres and farmers around the country. We want to stop the destruction. Resistance in the area has been increasing, but we're not going to stop until we've saved the moor.

Saturday 19th : National SHAC Demo for Animals in Laboratories

Report from cambridge-news.co.uk published on 21 April 2003

Protesters march for laboratory animals
By Lizzie Murphy

MORE than 1,000 animal rights activists descended on Cambridge city centre on Saturday afternoon. The annual demonstration, which took place on World Day for Laboratory Animals, was packed with protesters against Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS). Armed with placards, banners, horns and whistles, people of all ages gathered on Parker's Piece for a rally. There was an up-beat atmosphere as dance music blared out from large speakers at either side of a trailer-stage and there were food and information stalls in tents.

Heather James, of Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (SHAC), played a video illustrating the conditions in which laboratory animals are kept and afterwards spoke to the crowd about the work that the group had been doing. She said: "This is a warning to animal laboratories that we will not go away and we will go from strength to strength."

The protesters moved on to Parkside to start the march, which went down Park Terrace, St Andrew's Street, Sidney Street, Bridge Street, St John's Street, Senate House Hill, Trinity Street, King's Parade, Trumpington Street, Pembroke Street, Downing Street and back on to St Andrew's Street before returning to Parker's Piece. As they marched through the city the animal rights activists chanted "Close Down HLS" while blowing whistles and sounding horns. Police surrounded the protest, which they described as "good natured".

Afterwards Heather said: "It was a big turnout and we were pleased with it. There were a lot of new people and a lot of youngsters who give us hope for the future. This annual demonstration is important because it gathers everyone together against HLS and recruits new people for our cause."

Thursday 29th : Justice for Mark Barnsley

We heard Mark talk about :-
  • - his case
  • - the ongoing campaign to clear his name
  • - the prison struggle
  • & other related topics...

"I have spent over 8 years behind bars, all of it in high or maximum security prisons, having had my life destroyed, and being punished further still for protesting my innocence. All this because I was not prepared to allow myself to be killed by a bunch of middle-class louts."

Mark Barnsley is a working class writer and father of three who stumbled into a nightmare whilst out for a quiet drink with a friend and his baby daughter on June 8th 1994. After some verbal abuse, a gang of around 15 drunk students attacked him, completely unprovoked. They chased him, kicking him on the ground and causing many injuries. During the attack, one of them pulled out a knife which, fearing for his life, Mark managed to grab and hold onto. Even though he didn’t brandish it, this ended up being the basis of his conviction for assualt. In a trial marked by contradictions & perjury on behalf of the students (who could afford good lawyers), a biased judge and a hate campaign by the local newspaper The Sheffield Star against Mark, he was found guilty and sentenced to 12 years in prison - a ludicrous & unprecedented amount of time. None of the students were ever charged.

Finally freed from prison on 24th June 2002 after 8 years in high or maximum security prison (he was given extra years for protesting his innocence), Mark is currently involved with many supporters in a fight to clear his name.

INDEPENDENCE FROM AMERICA DAY . From report from Yorkshire CND

click for full size picAbout 400 people came from all over the country - north, south, east and west to the Gatecrasher's Ball at the American base at Menwith Hill calling for Independence FROM America. It was a very good day. The weather was kind - blue skies and sunshine. People rose to the occasion and came dressed in wonderful costumes including beautiful, imaginative ball gowns and masks (some men included!) and top hats and tails.

There was a wonderful line up of artists - musicians and poets which was hosted by Mark Thomas who also spoke in his unique way - a combination of humour and political satire. Food was provided by Veggies.

There was dancing in the road and later a drumming work shop facilitated by Steve Hill from Leeds. We reluctantly brought the demonstration to a close at about 7.30 pm.

Saturday 9th - Sunday 10th : Cancelled : Eden Festival 2003

The Eden Festival charity event had its entertainment license application rejected by Wirral Borough Council on 14th July 2003 following last minute objections from the statutory sector.
A spokesperson for Eden said, "The Eden Festival team are devastated by the news. This is a tremendous disappointment to everyone involved with the event. Eden had a great line-up of artists and wonderful ethics with profits going to charity. We know from the feedback that we have received that thousands of people were looking forward to the event and we are very sorry to disappoint them.
Eden is a 'not for profit' company so the co-ordinating team have worked unpaid on the project because they sincerely believed in the ideal of the festival. The associated charities put in funding to get the event off the ground. We are baffled that, after 12 months of negotiation and regular meetings that this could happen."
News updates can be found on the Eden Festival website.

Wednesday 13th to Sunday 17th : Earth First! Summer Gathering

The Earth First! Summer Gathering is the place where people involved in radical ecological direct action – or those who want to be involved – get together for four days of time and space to talk, walk, share skills, learn, play, rant, find out what’s going on, find out what’s next, live outside, strategise, hang out, incite, laugh and conspire. The gathering is also a practical example of non-hierarchical low-impact living in action. The Anarchist Teapot Action Kitchen provided Vegan food and Veggies supplied a few basic supplies and Cake in the chilled space of Cath's Caff!!

There was a beautiful site near Ripon, North Yorkshire, with 40 acres of meadows, ponds and woodland, a conservation site and focus for local wildlife projects. We are a diverse community with a wide range of approaches to our action, so there was plenty to interest and inspire everyone whether active for years or completely new to it all.

30th - 6th Sept : Vegan Summer Gathering

George Rodger reports in the Vegan Magazine, Winter 2003:

"For ten years now, there has been an annual residential gathering of vegans in late summer. This year, for the first time, it was near Swansea, in South Wales, 30 August to 6 September.

Several excursions were arranged throughout the week. I opted for visits to Carmarthen, and to Rhossili Bay & Worm’s Head, at the tip of the Gower Peninsula. I found the Gower inland countryside pleasant enough, but not outstanding. However the coastal scenery is mind-blowing - an alternation of vast sandy beaches and striking cliffs and rock formations.

There were a few evening meetings - the one I found most interesting was when Andrew Martin spoke about the new Veggies Centre in Nottingham, where he works."

Next years’ event, again at Mumbles will be earler in the year than usual: 5-12 June 2004.

Sunday 21st : Sumac Workshop Day

A bunch of keen volunteers turned up to help demolish a dangerous length of garden wall and begin repainting the fire escape. It was a beautiful day and we got lots done, with a large hole in the wall and red oxide paint patches on the fire escape as evidence of our hard work! Many thanks must go to all who slaved away in the (almost) Mediterranean heat, especially welcome new faces, Nel (plus friend Alex who unwittingly became a "guest" volunteer!) and Zoë. Now we'll need on-going help in erecting a temporary fence and rebuilding the wall, as well as completing the painting of the fire escape. Saturday 11th : Stop Primate Experiments At Cambridge

Massive March Rocks Cambridge

Report from http://www.primateprison.org

Between 1,500 and 2,000 people took to the streets of Cambridge yesterday and delivered a stark warning to Cambridge University of the consequences should they try to build the primate labs.

As the crowds gathered around midday, there was a mood of positive determination as more and more coaches and minibuses arrived from all over the country. In a large marquee a big video projector showed various films of primate research, some of it quite shocking, including a new one put together by the campaign especially for the day. There were also many different info stalls and 3 different groups providing vegan nutrition for the hungry travellers. At the same time, campaigners were towing a giant advertising trailer round and round the streets of Cambridge, with a brilliant campaign billboard, with a picture of a primate undergoing experimentation, and the website address in huge letters.

Before the march, there was a rally with speeches, which were inspiring and helped to further motivate the crowds which were now swelling to more than any of us had expected. As we gathered in the street for the march, it became obvious that this was going to be something special. Groups and individuals had been busy making original placards, banners and costumes, and had brought along megaphones, whistles, horns and drums etc. The effect was an amazing sea of colour and noise. The atmosphere was almost carnival, though with an edge of anger, purpose and determination, and far from seeming threatening, the march was joined by dozens of passers by.

We stopped for speeches at two strategic points en-route. Firstly the Senate House, where the university officials are based, who will take the final decision about the primate centre. Later we stopped at the animal labs in Downing College, where the speech was followed by 2 minutes silence in memory of the animals. Finally we made our way slowly back to Parker's Piece, the crowds even bigger than when we left an hour and a half earlier. There we gathered for another hour of networking, planning, speeches, stalls, eating...... ( Food by Veggies) Most agreed the day had been a big success. It was a lively and noisy day, though very peaceful, there were no arrests and no major incidents of conflict with the police or the public. At the same time, it was generally agreed that things will be very different if they try to go ahead with their plans.......

Saturday 11th : Menwith Hill

International Week of Protest called for by Global Network Against Nuclear Weapons and Power in Space

Report from Campaign for the Accountability of American Bases

This was the fourth year running that CAAB, and this year in conjunction with Yorkshire CND, had organised the protest at Menwith Hill for 'Keep Space for Peace' week. Menwith Hill - crucial with Fylingdales to the American Missile Defense System.

It was a beautiful warm Autumn day. The Yorkshire Dales looked stunning - but rudely interrupted by the perimeter fence, coils of barbed wire, CTTV cameras, radomes and an excess of police and police horses. Welcome to Menwith Hill - the reality of the US militarism of the Dales.

People of all ages came (approx. estimate 160/70) dressed in the theme of a 'celestial body' - wonderful costumes. Sheffield Samba Band arrived with energy, colour and fantastic rythms. People who had not been to Menwith Hill before came - a children's space was set up with wonderful paintings which were hung on the fence.

It was a moving moment at the start of the demonstration when Christine Dean (Treasurer of CAAB) invited us to turn our backs on the base for a minutes silence - remembering all those killed and injured because of the continuing violence in Iraq.

Chris introduced Dave Webb (Convenor of GN) and Chris Davies (North West England MEP) who spoke about the weaponisation of space and the fact that the UK gave away sovereignity to the US authorities many years ago.

Steve Hill facilitated a brilliant drumming workshop. Veggies of Nottingham provided the yummy food.

Lindis Percy (Joint Co-ordinator of CAAB) and Dave Webb (GN Convenor) took people on a guided walk round the base. This time we actually managed to get round the whole base (over policing prevented the walk on 4 July).

We stopped at various points round the base to give information about it and what it does. The two Space Based Infra Red System radomes which will be crucial to AMD were pointed out. There was a heavy police presence blocking access all round the base.

Thank you to everyone who came and made the day so good. We are even more determined than ever to stop the American Missile Defense System from becoming a reality.

In Peace ... Anni Rainbow and Lindis Percy, Joint Co-ordinators

Sunday 12th : Workshop Day

Another fine day and another big hole... The recalcitrant sycamore tree stump was finally pulled out and now we can think about rebuilding the wall it was destroying. Some gaping holes appeared too in the old workshop, which the team of volunteers began to demolish. We decided to leave handling the large amounts of asbestos to specialists — hopefully this will be done before the next workday. Many thanks to all those who helped.

Saturday 25th : 22nd Anarchist Book Fayre

From bookfair website:
"(...the) Bookfair was a huge success in our new venue. With more stalls, more meetings and more people than ever before, it was the largest anarchist gathering in the world last year. We covered our costs thanks to donations, and the coming Bookfair will also be held at ULU. People liked the fact that meetings and stalls were in the same building and they liked the extra space."

However due to the change of venue Food by Veggies was not to be at the bookfair itself (for the first time since the late '80s), but 'out on the streets', just where you'd expect to find us!

Saturday 8th : Let's Make their Mission Impossible!

Noise Demo & leaflet drop outside New Tribes Mission, UK headquarters.

- action against the New Tribes Mission (NTM), an international fundamentalist christian organisation bringing the ‘good news’ to the last remaining truely free tribal peoples on this earth.
- in solidarity with the tribal peoples of the West Papua who have named missionaries as one of the four main threats to their survival.
For over 30 years, the tribes of West Papua have been resisting the destruction of their land and peoples by Indonesia, its colonial ruler, and by corporations exploiting the country’s resources. Missionaries contacting tribes is the first step in this terrible process.

19th - 21st : George W Bush visits Britain

Wednesday: "A trial of President GW. Bush, was held in the Market Square, Nottingham this afternoon. Hundreds turned out in the city centre, to demonstrate dis-pleasure at this mans activities, and to hold him to account! The jury heard the evidence presented, that he was general bad-hat. He was found guilty!

"Later, many more turned out, heard speeches and then went of for a march around town to gather yet more support and show our feelings for this visit and policy."

These protests in Nottingham, were just a small part of the huge international effort. President Bush is a focus of concern not just for people campaigning against imperialist war but those concerned with other important issues such as arms, the environment, world poverty and civil liberties.

See reports at http://indymedia.org.uk

Thursday: National Demonstration in London. 150,000 people show Bush what we think of him and reduce Bush's state visit to a state of chaos. Thanks go to those helping Veggies distributing Samosas for Social Change and Bhajis not Bombs to raise £50 for Nottingham Friends of the Iraqi People.

Tuesday 2nd : Stop Sale of Reindeer Fur Rugs

At short notice, Nottm Animal Rights Joined with Lincoln campaigners for one of a countrywide series demonstrations against John Lewis to protest against their sale of rugs made from the skins of reindeer.

Despite negative media coverage and letters of protest from caring members of the public, John Lewis still refuse to do the decent thing and remove these rugs from their stores. Reindeer are gentle, social animals who want to live as much as you and I, and it contradicts John Lewis' fur-free policy to sell these rugs - especially at this time of year.

To keep up the pressure on John Lewis (Jessops in the Victoria Centre in Nottingham) tell them that you, your friends and family will not be shopping at their stores until reindeer-skin rugs are pulled off the shelves forever
