Tuesday 27th : Resisting Repression - Maintaining our right to protest
Video Showing and talk at The Sumac Centre
- In June 2003 ago during the G8 meeting in Evian, ex-Nottingham campaigner Martin Shaw narrowly escaped death when the Swiss police cut the rope he was hanging from in an attempt to blockade delegates attending the summit. Martin is now touring with a video of the incident and discussing the wave of both legal and physical repression that has been sweeping across world in recent years, and trying to stimulate ideas of what constructive steps we can take in the face of it.
From Gothenburg, to Genoa, to Thessaloniki, to last night in your neighbourhood, this was just one incident of repressive impunity among hundreds from the powers that be. What should we be doing about it as individuals, as affinity groups, as communities, and networks?
What is the new "anti terrorist" powers or the UK and EU governments taking and how does it affect you? What sort of tactics might the police be using for the G8 in the UK 2005?
What are "communities of resistance," and what are the most practical ways that we can support each other when such repression happens amongst us?

Tuesday 6th : World Social Forum
- Video and report back, at the Sumac Centre, from recent Gathering in Mumbai, and discussion about whether Nottingham needs a Social Forum of its own.
"Another world is possible" has from the outset been the slogan of the World Social Forum, which aims to counter the 30-year-old World Economic Forum. Instead of wealthy executives and politicians meeting behind closed doors, it is an open, democratic gathering of progressive voices from all parts of the world. Instead of looking at new ways to make profits, it explores ideas for attaining a just and sustainable global society. This year it was held in Asia and attracted 80,000 people from 130 countries who participated in 1200 events.

Tonight : The Globilisation Tapes
The Globalization Tapes is a film made by workers for workers. The story isn’t told by experts, but by union members from palm oil plantations in Indonesia. Their experience is complemented by workers from both Colombia and Holland. The film powerfully documents their exploration of history, globalization, and how unions around the world can support each other and struggle together.
Using their own forbidden history as a case study, the Indonesian filmmakers trace the development of contemporary globalization from its roots in colonialism to the present. Through chilling first-hand accounts, The Globalization Tapes exposes the devastating role of militarism and repression in building the “global economy”, and explores the relationships between trade, third-world debt, and international institutions like the IMF, the World Bank, and the World Trade Organization. The film explains how these institutions shape and enforce the corporate world order.
The Globalization Tapes is among the most powerful indictments of unfettered corporate power ever produced.

Wednesday 1st - Sherwood Tree Protest
- First anniversary of occupation of site protecting trees at Mansfield Woodhouse
Recent report: "Legal cases going on - there are 4 strong cases all ready to pounce if an eviction starts off and 3 more on the way (one we only just realised we could use - and it's a biggy!) . Bellway were bragging that they would be finishing the road by the end of July!! Well, they sure don't seem to be living in the real world eh? The tunnels will take 4-8 weeks minimum to evict. All are welcome on site (apart from Bellway of course!) and now would be a VERY good time to come down."

Fri 3rd - Mon 6th : International Animal Rights Gathering
This was a unique opportunity for animal protection activists from across the world to meet and swap ideas and learn new skills and a chance for all U.K. activists to gather together. A movement united and working together can only be good for the animals in labs, fur farms, slaughterhouses, zoos, circuses and on the hunting field. A movement united is something that terrifies our enemies.

Saturday 11th: SNGP National Demonstration
It was agreed recently that Stafford would be a great venue for a demo - more people from their localities need to know about the Halls and their dirty dealings with HLS and after this they will! For many decades the Hall family have been responsible for the murder of hundreds and thousands of animals.

The very first Anarchist Bookfair was in 1983. It's happened every year since and the Bookfair continues to be the largest and most important regular gathering of Anarchists in the world.
Once again, by popular demand there was
Food by Veggies, a traditional and integral part of the festivities, and transport from Nottingham.
This year we had the thrill of being barred by the venue management not once but twice!
Having carried a thousand pasties and cakes up three flights of stairs we were told "you can't bring your own food in here - even if you bought it at a local supermarket you can't eat it here."So, 15mins before the start of the event it was back down three flights of stairs to do what Veggies do best - feeding the masses on the streets - literally!
By 4pm the coffee machine was spotted too, so back we went down those stairs with the final flasks of fair trade tea and Zapatista Coffee!
Thanks to all the volunteers who coped so well and to the organisers for their support.
Those that couldn't make it to the fair will find a selection of books and magazines in Veggies Bookshop at the Sumac Centre, including
- 'Food Not Bombs' cookbook/manual . £6.
- 'Big Bad World' - Cartoon molotovs in the face of corporate rule, by Polyp . £6.

Monday 6th : Sherwood Tree Protection Camp eviction
In a sudden surprise move, the longest running eco-protest camp in Notts was evicted on Monday 7th December.
After giving a specific commitment that an eviction would not take place which the legal case for the preservation of the site was pending, some 150 police, baliffs and specialist tree climbers moved in at 8.30am, arresting three above-ground tree residents within minutes. One left the site voluntarily, to ensure the safety of the dogs, and one remained underground in the tunnels til 5.30pm.
The fight still goes on to get the land declared village green status, which would still stop the road widening.
Fortunately independent journalist, Tash, was able to report from close to the site, and his report can be found at http://indymedia.org.uk/en/2004/12/302471.html

FIRST VEGAN FESTIVAL
Adapted from report from Nottingham Evening Post - 3rd December 2004The first vegan festival in Nottingham featured tasty and healthy food using animal-free meat and cheese alternatives, cholestrol-free spreads and dips, salads, chocolates and cakes. Held at the ballroom in the Council House, Old Market Square and supported by the NHS '5-a-day' campaign and a range of local businesses, there was also vegan footwear and cruelty-free cosmetics, as well as talks, displays and free recipes and
Food by Veggies.
Festival co-ordinator Ronny Worsey said: "As awareness grows, more and more people are replacing animal products with vegan alternatives in pursuit of a more healthy and sustainable lifestyle. Vegan living has never been easier and our festival aims to show people just how much great meat, egg and dairy-free food is out there."
After the Event Ronny reported:We reckon it was a resounding success!
We were thrilled at the turnout (somewhere between 900 and 1,000 people) and people were queueing at the door to get in before the event opened, at 11am. A large proportion of those attending were local shoppers who dropped in on a spur of the moment impulse, which is exactly what we intended. Our approach of marketing the festival locally rather than concentrating on the national vegetarian press, extensive distribution of glossy flyers, and good clear visuals on the day really paid off. Judging by feedback from stallholders, we believe at least half of those coming were not vegetarian.
The 20 minute sheduled talk by Viva! went on for 1½ hours, as they had so many people 'heckling' and asking questions!
'Total Liberation' shoes reported that they were repeatedly asked why their shoes are vegan and other (ie. leather) shoes aren't.
Other stallholders reported that they really enjoyed the chance to engage with the public and talk about their ethics and products.
Over 150 recipe sheets for vegan cakes were printed, and they all went. The info stalls reported a strong interest in their books, and take up of leaflets was very high.
Feedback from those attending suggests that the vegetarians and vegans were delighted to see so many sympathetic stalls and businesses, and those who had previously been feeling a bit isolated left buzzing with enthusiasm and renewed confidence. Those attending who weren't vegan or veggie left feeling very inspired.
We didn't get everything right, and intend to have a full debriefing session in order to learn from this event and make the next one even better. Particular weak points were prior communication with stallholders, some tables being left empty, and effective collection of donations on the door. We can iron these shortcomings out. Comments and constuctive feedback from those who attended would be very welcome.
Special thanks are due to:
- Nottingham City Council for providing us with such a beautiful venue, and for being so helpful and approachable throughout.
- The Nottingham Evening Post and Trent FM for giving us such good prior publicity.
- Local Sumac Centre supporters and animal rights activists for turning up to pitch in, and working flat out all day, driving and unloading vehicles, preparing food, and handing out flyers in the cold.
- Redwood Foods, for sending us a big case of products to give out as samples.
- East Midlands Fine Foods, for all their expertise and contacts.
- All the stallholders, for being so downright ethical, excellent and friendly!
We haven't decided when and where our next festival will be held, but we're all fired up with enthusiasm now, so watch this space!
