http://www.veggies.org.uk/img/arc/circus_header2.jpgThe Captive Animals' Protection Society (CAPS) and Lush Croydon, have called on the public to boycott one of the country's few remaining animal circuses Zippos, when it performs at Beddington Park from Thursday 23rd May until Tuesday 28th May.

Zippos Circus is one of just a handful of circuses that have continued to use animals in the UK and use horses and ponies in their acts. Animal circuses have become increasingly unpopular due to growing awareness and concern at the way in which animals are transported from site to site, kept in temporary accommodation, and forced to perform in the circus ring.

Lush staff members from the local Croydon shop plan to stage a high-street performance with their own ring master drawing attention to the continued use of non-wild animals by Zippos. The stunt will take place outside the Lush shop on North End at 11am on Saturday 25th May. The shop will also be fundraising for CAPS over the weekend with Charity Pot sales. To getting involved (and dressed up?) please call Chris on 020 8681 7332 or email croydon@lush.co.uk

London Animal Rights Campaigners will holding leafleting protests by the gates to the circus on Thurs 23rd May from 6pm to 7.30pm and Sat 25th from 5pm to 7pm. More details below.

The UK Government have promised to implement a ban on the use of wild animals, such as tigers and elephants, on the 1 December 2015. The charity welcomes this commitment but says that there is a danger that domesticated animals such as horses will become the “forgotten victims of this outdated and unethical practice”.

Sample letter:

RE: ZIPPOS CIRCUS

I am writing to you after learning that you are hosting Zippos Circus.
Zippos forces animals to perform degrading and cruel tricks, and like many members of the UK public I am against such acts cruelty.

In fact I am very surprised that you would want to publicly support such cruelty and align yourself with such acts, given that last year Parliament voted unanimously to ban wild animals from circuses with the backing of 95% of the public.

Zippos circus is actually listed by the UK charity Captive Animals Protective Society as one to boycott over concerns with animal welfare; I urge you to reconsider your position as a matter of urgency and follow many other land owners and councils who have banned animal circuses from their land.

If you wish to host a circus there are plenty of very popular non animal circuses that could be used instead. Animals do not voluntarily ride bicycles, stand on their heads, balance on balls, or jump through rings of fire.

They don't perform these and other difficult tricks because they want to; they perform them because they're afraid of what will happen if they don't.For animals in circuses, there is no such thing as "positive reinforcement" only varying degrees of punishment and deprivation.

To force them to perform these meaningless and physically uncomfortable tricks, trainers use whips, tight collars, muzzles, electric prods, bullhooks, and other painful tools of the trade.

I find it absolutely disgusting that you would support such cruelty, and I am urging everyone to boycott your shopping centre until you decide to ban animal circuses from your land.

Yours faithfully

8th May 2012: Circus in Figges Marsh, Mitcham, draws protests from animal activists
An animal charity staged a demonstration outside Zippos circus this week – one of just seven UK circuses’ which still use animals in their show.

(CAPS) said the treatment of the animals is unfair because they are are transported from site to site, kept in temporary accommodation, and forced to perform tricks.

Mr Paul Joy, 31, who protested outside the circus on behalf of the charity, said: "It is legal for them to be kept in these conditions but we think it’s morally wrong."

Liz Tyson, director of the charity, said: "We strongly believe that a life of constant transportation, confinement and repetitive unnatural performances is no life for any animal and we would encourage families to choose one of the fantastic all-human shows to get their circus fix this year".
