On Saturday 17th March 2012 we celebrated the ones who got away and called for justice for those who remain!

Report from Cambridge News 19/03/2012

Animal rights activists marched in St Ives as part of a protest against the work of Harlan Laboratories site at nearby Wyton where animals are bred for research.

The group marched through the town centre after a demonstration outside Harlan’s premises organised by the National Anti-Vivisection Alliance (NAVA).

Dr Victoria Martindale, of Safer Medicines, who was one of the speakers at the rally in St Ives, said: “It is an industry where torture and murder goes on in secret.

“Without Harlan the vivisection industry would not survive.”

Dr Martindale said tests on animals produced flawed results and that more reliable tests which did not involve animals were available.

She said: “This is an area where science has not caught up and still relies on models dating back to the Victorian era.”

The protest marked the 22nd anniversary of 82 beagles and 26 rabbits being released from Harlan.

Erica Barclay, from NAVA, said: “We welcome any local people who want to join us and our aim is to be friendly and approachable, contrary to the image the media and Harlan would like us to be portrayed as.

“Our aim is to reach out to the hearts of pet owners in St Ives and get them to link their animals with the dogs at Harlan and realise that in suffering they are all equal.”

Harlan BeeglesOver the last few months we have won victory over victory against Harlan with staff leaving, the general manager resigning, docks and airports pulling out of transporting the dogs, suppliers refusing to deal with them and a tv documentary made about us which showed us in a really good light and the presenter even said at the end he thought we would win the battle. But.....we cannot ever sit back...we have to keep the unrelentless pressure up to get this close placed down. It is just a few hours...please join us if you can.

Meet at 12noon at Jubilee Park, just round the corner from Harlan. At 12.30 we will drive down to the site (late comers see below). We will stay there for an hour or so and then will move on to a march in St Ives. The theme for the march is 'What if it was your dog?'
