Nottingham played it's part in the Faslane blockade on Saturday March 31st & Sunday April 1st 2007. There was plenty of work to be done before that - particularly in terms of planning the action and raising funds for publicity and the blockade itself.Nottingham Faslane 365 was a loose association of individuals committed to providing people to peacefully blockade Faslane, and to support that pledge by coordinating all aspects of a Nottingham blockade, including transport, legal support, non-violent direct action training, fund-raising, accommodation, catering.... This was a great chance to be involved in a unique action and to have a direct impact on the business of building nuclear weapons. Support was also welcomed from people unable to travel to Scotland and those unable to face arrest. ![]() Faslane 365 has two purposes - firstly, to bring people to witness and impede the nuclear base where Britain's nuclear weapons are deployed, and enable them to demonstrate the range of serious concerns - from human rights to climate change - that people in the real world consider to be the vital challenges for the 21st century. At a time when Tony Blair has put on the political agenda the prospect of spending between £40 and £76 billion more to keep nuclear weapons in Scotland until at least the year 2055, Faslane 365 will draw attention to the dangerous insecurity and waste of resources inherent in the Trident nuclear system, and will mobilise support forthese nuclear mistakes to be disarmed. In preventing nuclear 'business as usual' we also intend to highlight our real, human security needs, which will require a very different allocation of resources and action. Nottm Welcomes Benelux Blockaders"Faslane Naval Base (near Glasgow), Tuesday 2nd January 2007 - A group of 25 activists from the Belgian environmental group "Friends of the Earth Flanders & Brussels" have blocked the British nuclear submarine base since 8am this morning. The activists demand that the British government makes moves towards nuclear disarmament. This morning 8 activists were arrested after nonviolently blocking both main entrances to the base. Amongst those arrested were people from Belgium, Netherlands, Germany and Finland." Following the blockade the Sumac Centre was pleased to receive the group for a Nottingham stop-over before their journey home. Perhaps we will continue the liaison with a visit to the Hiroshima/Nagasaki rememberance blockade in Belgium in August... See Benelux Faslane 365 info .and. Friends of the Earth Flanders & Brussels
