It is suggested that work be done to revamp the website. The next working group meeting may be on Monday 28th May at 7pm (to be confirmed – check back here later, or get in touch to express your interest).
Please visit www.sumac.org.uk and send your comments.
What we want from the sumac website:
- To make it easier for people to get involved
- To make it easier to see events are hapenning at the Sumac
- To tell people who we are, what we do and what our values are
- To link in with the collectives who are based at the sumac
- A central place where sumac projects can recruit and communicate with volunteers
- To sync together info about sumac events that exists in reality (i.e. diaries in the centre) with the same info online
- To be simple to use
- To increase the communication with people who cant actually make it to the Sumac
- To be transparent (but also aware of the need for confidentiality at time
- To not replicate what already exists, or what Indymedia is for
- To sync together the website with other online communities connected to the centre (such as Facebook)
- To be mindful of the ethics of online tools, and open source as much as possible
Issues raised
- Being mindful of duplicating what already exists. A lot of what we want may already be avaialble on the current site, but the current site uses programming language that is complicated and few people have the skills to update it, so..
- It needs to be simpe to use. Possibly something ike wordpress
- Discussion of the necessity or not of having one primary diary, between paper and online versions. Also, the possibility of phasing out the paper diaries and eventually replacing them with a computer diary in the centre
- being mindful of what we can expect a website to achieve, and being realistic about this. It isnt going to solve all the issues of the Sumac and have the centre packed to the gills with people
- Mindful that there is a fair amount of energy to work on the website and maintain in at the moment.
Ideas for the front page of the site:
- Picture of the building
- Introduction to the centre
- Contact details
- Map
- News and/or events feed
- Links to collectives in the centre
