Mink farmer slams demo

They claim Mr Kelsall - and Britain's other 10 fur farmers - are about
to embark on the slaughter of thousands of mink as part of their trade.
But Mr Kelsall says the protesters are wasting their time because he has
given up his fight to keep his business going in the wake of new
government legislation.
The Fur Farming (Prohibition) Bill is expected to be on the statute book
and get Royal assent later this month. Mink farmers would have then had
until January 2003 to cease operating under the new laws.
But members of CAFT want Mr Kelsall to close his factory farm down by
the end of this year.
A spokesman for CAFT said: "Mr Kelsall likes to portray himself as the
innocent victim struggling against opposition from animal protection
campaigners and the government who wish to see an end to fur farming.
"But the real victim are the animals that Mr Kelsall and the other 10
fur farmers left in Britain slaughter throughout November and December.
"Mr Kelsall will be killing, most likely by gassing, innocent animals
who have lived a miserable existence.
"Our campaign against fur farming will continue until the last British
fur farm has closed and we are calling on the remaining farmers to close
this winter.''
Mr Kelsall said that his mink would be put to sleep sometime between now
and January depending on the weather.
He added: "The campaigners are wasting their time because after another
couple of months of negotiations with the government over compensation
it will all be over anyway.''
