SHELL, CUSTOMERS OF HLS
Based on an email received from various sources
SHELL, CUSTOMERS OF HLS"Shell not only destroy the environment AND facilitate the abuse of human rights (remember the Ogoni people in Nigeria and the execution of Ken Saro Wiwa?) On top of that Shell is a customer of HLS, and pay them to test products including petrol on animals. A recent test involved poisoning animals to test a plasticiser for PVC.
One way you can target them is to leave a piece of cardboard with “SORRY, NO UNLEADED” near their entrance. This will make anyone intending to buy unleaded (which is by far the most common type of fuel sold) drive on by. In tiny letters write on “stop funding HLS” so staff will know why you’ve done it when they find out (IF they find out !)
There have been several demos in the Brighton and Hove area. The Shell station on the London Road near Preston Park was targeted on 18th August and 5 people gained access to the roof and a banner was dropped. 15 people were on the ground leafleting, whistles were blown and there was a lot of shouting. The manager closed the forecourt. Police – EGs, riot van, motor bike - arrived after 1½ hours. Protesters stayed for 2-3 hours. Public response was good with lots of tooting of horns and many turned away from the forecourt when they knew what it was about. This demo got on Meridian TV news and made the local Argus newspaper, together with a photo, thus spreading the word to thousands of readers. The Shell station on the Old Shoreham Road near the old football ground site was targeted twice and many drivers turned away when they saw the posters and signs. Leaflets were handed out.
Sat Evening 18 Aug - Shell Garage, Old Shoreham Road About 20 protesters decided to voice their opinions about Shell being a customer of HLS. Using informative banners and stickers we spread the word and closed down this garage for 40 minutes. The pumps/power was turned of for our own safety. This Shell Garage, like most others, is franchise owned which means Shell only profit from petrol they sell to it - but as we pointed out to the red-faced Assistant Manager who turned up and told us to demonstrate at Shell directly - it is up to him as a franchisee to complain to Shell and tell them to cease their involvement with HLS. As we left a neighbour opposite called out "Keep up the good work" - Thanks, we will.
