A book is being written by a long term Veggies volunteer about Veggies and Nottingham's Rainbow Centre (now the Sumac Centre), and their influence on the British social justice movement since 1984.
There are some key events which she needs reports of from people who were there.
Were you at any of the following?
Photos of the following are also needed:
- National protest against Boots, which attracted over 1,000 people. Saturday 7th November 1992. Nottingham city centre.
- June 18th RTS demo, City of London, Friday 18th June 1999.
- Glastonbury festival - any year since 1990
Some reports of recent events can be found in Veggies archive
- Mayday 2000 (Parliament Square) or 2001 (general sites in London) Especially the free burger givaway outside McD!
- Peace Demo at Excel (Docklands) 11th Sept 2001
- National Vegan Festival (any year)
- Anarchist Book Fair (any year)
- Any reclaim the streets demo
- Any critical mass demo
- Any 'free vegan food tasting' local event
If you can help with any of the above, please email Ronny and she'd be very grateful.
The book will be based on the info from Ronny's research, by going through paperwork, contacting the organisers of events and of course, interviewing people who were there. There is quite a lot of info already, including all the old animal rights calendars and some press cuttings from 1984! Ronny intends to spend a good year tracking people down and writing up their recollections. This book will not simply chart the history of Veggies - it will explore the progress of a variety of social justice movements over the last couple of decades. First names only will be used, as many people have spent quality midweek time campaigning that they were officially using to look for work.
Veggie Volunteers - this is where you come in. It would be really appreciated if you'd take a few minutes to fill in this short questionnaire by emailing your answers back to ronny@veggies.org.uk
Thanks for your help, and do forward this to anyone else whom you think might be interested.
Please note that contributors will be shown any comments they make for approval before they are included in the book.
- About how many years ago did you first come across Veggies, and what were you up to at the time? What made you decide to get involved with Veggies?
- What is (are) your MAIN area(s) of interest with regards to campaigning? (Delete those that don't apply) animal rights, hunt sabbing, human rights, peace, environmental education, Green Party, cycling, environmental direct action, anti-globalisation, anti-McDonalds, sharing of resources, anti fascist, workers rights, other.
- Are there any particular events, (such as demonstrations, fairs, protest camps, AGMs, meetings, festivals) which stand out in your memory that you'd be able to tell me about? (Simply name the event, and I'll interview you to get more details.)
- Do you have any photos of events which Veggies have been at? Would you be able to let me have the photo to scan into the book (will be returned), or email me a jpeg of the photo? (Veggies do not have to actually be in the photo!) Do you have any art that you'd like me to include in the book?
- Would you be happy for me to arrange to interview you when I'm next in Nottingham (probably mid-March), or some other location, if you've moved?
Thanks a lot for your time.
