Monday 6th December 2004 : Sherwood Eviction - Trees Destroyed

Police and bailiffs stormed the site this moning, with no notice and no regard for the safety of those on site.
This was posted on Road Alert.

"Everyone is out. Only 4 of us resisted - 2 in the trees, one in the tunnel and one on a ground lock on. They stormed site at 8.30am using the balliff version of shock and awe tactics (kind of a mild suprise and bemusment really). Luckily most of us were in defences anyway because the place was crawling with balliffs within seconds of the shout going out. We did our best in the trees - but the more hardcore defences were captured before we could reach them and unfortunately we were out within hours. Our "hardcore" tunnel it turned out was just too hard core - as we had burrowed through the solid rock the tunnel team simply smash through all of our defences - instead of digging around them which is the usual tactic in more fragile enviroments. Bollocks.

Still - I know I can live with myself for what I've done. Nite nite Bellways Plc. The consequences of your actions will return to you."

I don't believe this was a false alarm - but we are still here - still alot of security action, about 60+ yellow coats in vacinity, some on Bellway property, some in disused railway carpark. Machinery arrived day b4 ambulance and security etc. vans passing up and down constently. called for assistence - MANY came Site was buzzing Police were informed that we believed an illegal eviction was due to kick off. Police turned up and confronted security.

We believe we have possibly put them off an illegal 'jump us' style eviction. Who knows? All we know is it didn't happen. We are staying in defences and all ready for the off. Many security and yellow coats about - some work IS being done to railway - but not using all the people milling about by any means. Due to phone problems (coincedence?) we have a new setup - calls to - 07050 656410 will get you through.

From SchNEWS Party & Protest site . 17th October 2003

Bellway, the property developers revving up their chainsaws so they can Friar Tuck up the ancient Sherwood Forest in order to build 270 poor quality homes, have been given the go-ahead by the Sheriff of Nottingham to evict the merry protesters living in the beech tree at the centre of the controversy (SchNEWS 415). The 60ft, 300 year old tree is situated on a piece of green that has been used by local residents as a recreation area for over 40 years. With massive local support protestors are preparing an application for village green status, their only remaining option to protect the site. More merry men and women are urgently needed to stay on the site and stop the developers robbin’ woods from locals.

Robbin' Woods

From SchNEWS issue 415 . 18th July 2003

"Sherwood forest is under attack from a band of corporate thieves and the Sherrif of Nottingham isn’t lifting a finger. The thieves, Belway, are attempting to destroy a rare limestone habitat and a natural meadowland to build an unnecessary road junction. The area is supposedly guarded by a Tree Protection Order as it possesses a 300 year old beech tree yet the council are refusing to take any action against the developers. This is some of the last remaining green space in the area and it’s being surveyed as a possible EU site of conservation. There’s a desperate need for Robin Hoods and merry men and women to steal the power from the rich and give it back to the poor trees".

BENEFIT GIG

A benefit for the camp took place on Sunday 26th October 2003, with Mansfield Woodhouse's own Reggae Band, RANKIN’ STEADY ... and ... Nottingham's Famous TRICKSTER, at The Maze, 257 Mansfield Road, Nottingham

The turn out wasn't a high as hoped (perhaps being on a Sunday night and competing with The Matrix didn't help.) However the evening gave the opportunity for a well deserved night off for the stalwart campers to relax and even shake a leg or two.

Thanks to the bands, the venue and to Sharon, Emma and others involved in putting the gig on.
