Brighton Vegan Beer & Cider Festival 2018

Brighton’s VEGAN festival is set to impress across three massive days here at the Cowley Club.
Due to popular demand and success and great feedback u, we decided to spoil Brighton’s vegan community with another .treat

There should be something for everyone. Ale, stouts, lagers, ciders, non alcoholic fermented drinks such as kombucha and kefir and obviously lots of herbal teas and coffees. Expect as well loads of other treats such as amazing and scrumptious plant based food, mountains of sinfully delicious cakes and obviously the infamous mouthwatering “pork” pies that went down like a storm and we couldn’t make enough of.

Be surprised by the wide selection of local beers and ciders made without any animal derived finings

Last time we had almost 30 different brews from 14 local producers, this time we might go even more crazy and spoil you for choice even mooooore.

There will be as well great music and live bands and this time even some wild dancing on Saturday night, the rumour says. During the day we will be open to the public so you will have chance to check out what the “normally” “closed & weird looking” private member’s club / vegan community space is all about.

Our amazing radical library at the back should be open as well so why not sign up and borrow some rare thought provoking books, magazines, zones or DVDs.

On Sunday we will be serving scrumptious Sunday roast prepared by Brighton Hunt Saboteurs and raising money for they direct action activism.

With the veganism gaining popularity all over country and in Brighton especially, it would be a shame not to visit and find out more about Brighton’s first and only not for profit and entirely run by volunteers/ from day one, back in 2003 till now / 100% vegan community and grassroots hub and all the campaigns and action groups it supports.

Sumac Gardening

The Sumac garden has been turned into mini community allotments! The vegetable beds are divided up in to small plots. Individuals and groups can request this space to grow fruit, vegetables, herbs, and flowers for local wildlife.

Local food production is an important part of a low carbon society. We want to encourage, support and learn about food growing in Forest Fields. The Sumac garden is organic and laid out to show the best use of a small space. It is full of ideas you could use to grow your own.

There are still mini garden plots available in the Sumac garden for groups or individuals to grow their own fruit and vegetables. People are welcome to take on a space to grow over Winter veg or express an interest for next Spring!

If you are keen to get involved join us on Wednesday afternoons, or just pitch in on your own initiative.

Cowley Club’s 15th birthday! A night of DIY, lo-fi folk punk

It was 15 years ago the Cowley Club first opened its doors. Set up by a group of local activists, it followed a series of squatted cafes along London Road that operated under the name of the Anarchist Teapot.

15 years is an amazing length of time for a members’ club so we’re celebrating the landmark with a night of lo-fi folk punk. On the bill are:

POG
A blistering mix of orchestral flourishes and folk punk roots. The first time we played at the Cowley Club was in 2002, about 3 months after it opened so it’s lovely to be taking part in this event.

JIMMY AND THE WORN OUT SHOES
Egg and chips pound shop pop that will make your mouth smile and your heart do little skips and hops. Comes somewhere between Jonathan Richman, the TV Personalities and of course the Blue Minkies, who half of the band used to be in.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rW_2rLjxVcI

CHUCK SJ HAY
Folk punk that is inventive, unique, brutally honest and utterly brilliant. Every time we see Chuck they manage the impossible by being even more splendid than the time before.

SUBURBAN DEATH TWITCH
Melodic and acerbic cello and piano-led indie pop that recalls the best of Sarah and WIAIWYA Records, but with a much better sense of humour. Just wonderful:
