This is a list of tasks that are performed at the sumac each week. The “visual presentation” working group of claire, kate and rosie are planning to design and create notice boards, rotas, etc with these tasks on in order to create greater transparency and encourage wider participation.

– Turn on safety lights when opening up building to public. (separate switch in lighting cupboard on stage).
– Turn them off when you leave.
– Turn on and off the flood lights if opening up when its dark outside (separate switch in lighting cupboard on stage).
– Turn on light rope (switch in corner below bookstall).

– Tidy furniture to make main room a useable and presentable space.
– Do constant decluttering.

– Minimum of three times a week the floor needs hoovering and the tables need wiping down.
– Mop main room, kitchen and toilets (should be at least once a week)

– Check toilet roll is stocked up. If it’s not get some more from the shop, keep your receipt and then either speak to the bar or finance collective to get reimbursed.

– Collect and sort through mail putting it into appropriate boxes.
– Check phone messages and contact appropriate people.

– Clear air-dried plates off drainer to leave clear for next washing up session.
– Do the washing up that’s been left in the kitchen.
– Check that cafe counter is clear where safety hatch falls.
– Make sure there’s no food left in kitchen (box it up, label it and put it in freezers downstairs or take it home)
– Take dirty/damp tea towels and toilet towels to wash.
– Clean the kitchen (2x weekly)

– Clean bar (3 x weekly)
– Empty bins from behind the bar.

– Take recycling out and empty bin into bins at end of yard. Replace bin bag (kept underneath sink in kitchen.) This needs doing minimum of every two days. Recycling bins go out on alternate Thursdays.

– Sweep yard (collect fag ends, tins and crisp packets from around yard) – ideally weekly.

– Remove out of date posters from pillar and replace with info on forthcoming events at Sumac or involving Sumac groups
– Restore/tidy the display of current info fliers by the pillar if it has been displaced by alternative use of the table.

– Check that computers are turned off when not in use.

– Ensure door is locked whenever you leave the building unattended, especially at the end of each day.


Roles & Responsibilities

The Sumac Committee is composed of those ‘members’ accepting a work commitment to coordinate the practical or administrative tasks necessary for the Sumac Centre to function.

Committee members also commit to regularly attending the First Monday of the Month Admin Meetings at which decisions effecting the daily running and long term direction of Sumac are taken.

Committee members are named people with a clear & public means of contact.

Forest Fields Social Club

The Forest Field Social Club aka ‘Sumac Bar’, is a separately constituted members club that hires the Sumac Centre on club nights.

Kitchen Group

The Kitchen is a shared resource for all Sumac Users. As such it should be left clean ready for the next user. The Kitchen Coordinator’s task is therefore not to clean the kitchen, but to troubleshoot problems when other haven’t!

People’s Kitchen happens every Saturday, headed up each time by a different volunteer from the local community. Typically a cook will do one event as fundraisers for their campaigns and another support the running of the kitchen.
