Empathy Day 2017

Sat 25th March, 2017 @ 11:00 - 16:00

Empathy:

“The ability to share someone else’s feelings or experiences by imagining what it would be like to be in that person’s situation.”
“The ability to understand and share the feelings of another.”

Empathy Day is a day to feel for others, particularly for animals. If they can feel, what must they be feeling?

Empathy is not a virtue reserved for any demographic, culture or religion but a core responsibility of living in a world that contains more than just you, your family and your kind.

This Empathy Day, why not look for opportunities to imagine the path of others less fortunate than yourself, particularly those that humans routinely injure without empathy.

On Saturday March the 25th, Animal Rights groups will be out in city centres with many eye-catching information stalls, challenging their community to imagine what it would be like to be in the situation of animals who are routinely abused by humankind.

What would it be like to be the victim of anglers, with a hook through your throat, dragged into an environment where you can’t breathe?

What would it be like to be a mother rat in captivity just wishing to be left alone but in a place where what’s actually going to happen is your babies are going to be taken away to be horrifically tortured and killed in crude, anachronistic experiments?

What would it be like to be a hen living your entire life in a barn with 40,000 others surrounded by death and excrement, pumped full of antibiotics to try and keep you alive and told you should count yourself lucky because you are not in a cage?

…and what would it be like at the end, facing the slaughter room, hearing the screams of those ahead of you, panicking, begging for mercy but finding at last only a completely desensitized man with a knife?

Yet, it doesn’t have to be like this.

The stalls will also be promoting and facilitating an alternative path where empathizing people progressively abstain from supporting the violence of the animal industries – through meat reduction, vegetarianism and ultimately VEGANISM, where people boycott products that are tested on animals, and where people actively campaign to end the suffering of all creatures great and small.
