Spycops & Political Activism, Newcastle

In 1968, the British Metropolitan Police created the ‘Special Demonstration Squad’, an undercover group to infiltrate protest groups.
50 years later and over 1,000 groups including community action groups and justice campaigns have been spied on by over 250 officers.
On many occasions, officers entered into relationships with female campaigners who knew nothing of their identities, often only finding out the truth years later.
As a call for justice for the victims of spycops is met with equal support and criticism, it begs the question: will there ever be justice for the victims of the undercover policing in the UK?
