Shambala Festival – Rebel Soul 2022 – to be confirmed

TO BE CONFIRMED

Shambala is a creative, non-commercial, ethical and family-friendly festival with a wild side and completely independent from advertising and sponsorship!

In 2016 Shambala went Meat and fish free, to continue their mission to keep Shambala at the cutting edge of sustainable event organising.

“… we’re setting ourselves a challenge: to provide the most eye-popping, mouthwatering, colourful, hearty array of cuisine at Shambala 2016 without a single bit of meat or fish on sale. Not a sausage. Instead, keep your eyes peeled for … a range of delicious food from around the world, debates, talks and creative exploration of the wonderful world of food.

Shambala HQ is a mixed bag, with vegans, veggies and meat eaters co-existing harmoniously together. However  the whole team agrees that it is important to be bold with our environmental stance, and encourage this debate.”

Rebel Soul

Whilst not catering at the event, Veggies will assist again with facilities for the Rebel Soul space. There will be a programme of intellectual stimulation, music and performance that will challenge, inspire and fire you up. Whet your appetite: fresh-baked cake, pasties & samosas, teas & coffees (for donation), and fairtrade tuck shop.

Rebel Soul will be a whole area combining beautiful tents and beautiful people within to celebrate rebellion, resistance and exploring positive futures. Stimulation for your mind with workshop, displays, info and bookstall and, for your aural delectation, a fine line-up of music and poetry.

“Rebel Soul is politics thinly veiled as entertainment. In the day we host workshops and debates on hot topics run by people who know their fields inside out. We host the country’s frontline campaigners. We bring you the people who will ask the big questions, and then help you answer them. Why is Shambala vegetarian? What is sex? What is race?”

By night we celebrate with bangin’ bands and DJs from punk to soca to techno, and from all over the world. We have a store full of books and zines and a tuck shop with hot drinks and delicious cakes. All our proceeds go to support grassroots campaigns – last year we funded groups supporting asylum seekers.

Meat and fish-free Shambala has ‘Gone Off Dairy Milk Too

For 2022 Shambala say:

In 2016, we made the decision to remove meat and fish from our on-site food offering, for both the public and our festival staff.

For us, the decision was an environmental one. If we’re serious about being the most sustainable festival on the planet, we can’t ignore the undisputable evidence that a diet predominantly based on meat and fish is having a devastating effect on this little blue and green marble we call home.

AFTER YEAR ONE OF BEING A VEGGIE PARADISE, 77% OF RESPONDENTS TO OUR 2016 POST-EVENT SURVEY VOTED TO KEEP SHAMBALA MEAT AND FISH FREE. THE FOLLOWING YEAR, THAT FIGURE ROSE TO 94% – A RESULT BEYOND OUR WILDEST IMAGININGS!

Even more incredible was that 33% of you reporting reducing your meat and fish intake since the festival (that’s not counting the 30% of you that were already veggie or vegan).

SO.. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR 2021? Join the debate.

Zapatista Journey for Life

https://twitter.com/veggiesnottm/status/1456380521739689989

What is the ‘Journey for life’?

On 1st January 2021 Indigenous Mayan Zapatistas published a declaration for life announcing an ‘invasion’ of Europe, a mission of solidarity and rebellion to mark 500 years since colonisation. The objective of this “Journey for Life” is to have meetings, dialogues, exchanges of ideas, and experiences with all who are committed, from different perspectives and fronts, to dismantling capitalism, as well as patriarchy, racism, imperialism, colonialism, and other violent systems that destroy life.

The North of England and the Midlands section of the tour will only be 4 days – 28th to 31st October.

  • Thurs 28th: Bradford
  • Friday 29th: Midlands gathering hub at Nottingham Sumac Centre
  • Sat/Sun 30/31st: Manchester & Liverpool

We will host a visit of a 7-person delegation at Nottingham’s Sumac Centre on Thursday 28th/Friday 29th. They will take a day trip to Bradford on the Thursday but we invite all interested groups and individuals to contact us to get involved to make the most of this unique once in a half millennium opportunity! We have space for people from around the region to relay their stories to the Zapatistas, but also to meet and network with each other. There is space to stop over before and/or after if that helps people traveling from outside of Nottingham.

Restrictions: The Zapatistas are very strict about anonymity and also about COVID security, given how badly it would affect the international tour if any of them were to catch it. This Guidance document gives you an idea of their requirements and an idea of the kinds of things they want to hear about and speak about.

More Nottingham details here.

Invitation to meet with Zapatista delegation, Nottingham, 29 October

Hi everyone

We would love for people and projects from across the Midlands, Yorkshire and the North-East to meet with the Zapatista delegation which is touring the UK & Ireland at the moment. For example people from Our Future Leeds/Leeds Climate Action going to join their day in Nottingham on Friday 29th October, together with members of the Landworkers Alliance.

Here’s some Zapatista background:
The Zapatista National Liberation Army (EZLN in spanish) is an indigenous Maya organisation from Chiapas in the southern mountains of Mexico, who, in 1994, claimed autonomy from the Mexican government in multiple communities in Chiapas – they have managed to maintain these autonomous areas ever since.  Their struggle is against neo-liberal capitalism/earth destruction, against the discrimination against and repression of indigenous peoples, and in favour of dignity, women’s equality and sovereignty over land and food.

The Journey for Life is a fact-finding and relationship-building mission – 200 Zapatistas have come to Europe to meet people/groups/communities ‘from the left and below’, to find common ground, to explain more about their historical and current struggles, to find out what life is like for people in resistance here and to build alliances.

We, some individual Zapatista supporters in the North/Midlands, planning the tour in our region, are hosting a delegation of 6 Zapatista men.

The tour programme has been drastically cut due to the new COVID travel restrictions, so we now only have 2 days in Yorkshire/Midlands, of which one day (the 28th in Barnsley) is devoted to union and community organising past & present, the legacy of Thatcher and the miners’ strike, police infiltration (Orgreave) and co-operative intentional communities.

Nottingham, 29 Oct:
That leaves us one day (29th) for other groups from the North East and Midlands and for issues not covered by other host locations.  We hope our day will include some municipalist strategic projects, some land-related stuff (Land Workers Alliance) and bits and bobs of other stuff, perhaps including solidarity economy and perhaps including a couple of folks from a traveller organisation.

We encourage all participants to attend for as much of the day as they can.  We are developing a loose programme where each topic/project is covered at a roughly set time and that the Zapatistas will talk about their history, principles and political strategy for a couple of hours in the middle of the day.

It’s helpful for the Zapatistas to understand the difficulties that nearly all political projects on the left are grappling with, so come along with a critical perspective when you join us.

The discussions will be held between Neds Housing Co-operative and the Sumac Centre co-operative Social Club in Forest Fields.

Restrictions: The Zapatistas are very strict about anonymity and also about COVID security, given how badly it would affect the international tour if any of them were to catch it.  I attach sections of the Guidance we’re working from, to give you an idea of their requirements and an idea of the kinds of things they want to hear about and speak about.

Northern Green Gathering 2021

The Northern Green Gathering  returns in 2021 at a new site at Scholey Park in Lincolnshire.

Northern Green Gathering is a small volunteer-run environmental/educational gathering focused around sustainable living and green campaigns.

A 4-day camping event with environmental workshops & campaigns, including Food for a Future, permaculture, organic veggie cafes including #FoodByVeggies, stalls, healers & alternative therapies, kids space, theatre & circus workshops, and a showcase of environment living in action, including solar power and wind power.

Green Gathering POSTPONED to 2022

POSTPONED

A four day festival beyond hedonism powered by wind, sun and people… just the best!

Educate for sustainability, create alternatives, frolic in fields. Powered by wind, sun & people, and Food by Veggies. Veggies hope again to be supporting a Co-operators Camp together with Radical Routes & others, in the Campaigns Zone.

We are continuing to push forward our minimal packaging  policies – extending the use of proper mugs to serving soft drinks in returnable beakers, to reduce use of single use plastics & straws.  We have now established distribution of our Ethical Consumer Best Buy Burger/Sosage Mixes to many other caterers to help raise their ethical sourcing and ended the production of frozen foods. We have increased the hemp in the mix and aim soon to sourced our herbs, and possibly our hemp, from Bradley Nook Farm who, in 2017, donated it’s beef herd to all-life rescue and is transitioning, with our support, to vegan organic growing.

Earth First Summer Resistance

No  Earth First Summer Gathering this year – instead  Earth First is calling for a Summer Dispersal of Decentralised Days of Resistance.

Concerns around the spread of the virus mean we feel it’s safest not to organise a mass gathering this year but the need to actively resist capitalism and ecological destruction has never been greater.

Covid 19, climate change, racial inequality, poverty: These are all symptoms of a broken system that sees the earth’s resources as infinite, purely for human use and abuse, without a thought for the consequences, and which prioritises profit above all else and oppresses and divides people along racial, gender, class and other lines to maintain its power.
