Kent Against All Live Exports – Wednesday 1st February – Ramsgate

Ramsgate is the only port in England, if not the UK, to transport live animals abroad for slaughter. A Memorial for Jill has been every year since live exports started from Ramsgate back in 2011. We also remember Mike Hill hunt saboteur as his death anniversary is also in February (see further below).

Please come to Nethercourt Roundabout, Ramsgate CT11 0JX, to meet the cattle trucks for a Jill Phipps Memorial Vigil on Wednesday 1st February 2017 from 12pm to 3pm the 22nd Anniversary of Jill’s murder by a live export truck driver and Coventry police.

Please bring banners and placards, pictures of Jill along with flowers, wreaths and purple ribbon to tie on the roundabout and in the vicinity. There will be a 2 min silence, wreath laying and speakers at this Memorial to dear Jill our friend and anti live exports activist. Please put this date in your diary and let’s remember Jill who lived and died for the animals.

In memory of Jill and Mike Ramsgate campaigners are having an anti-vivisection stall in Ramsgate on Saturday 4th February for Animal, Human and Earth Liberation.

Meanwhile, we at Veggies will also be remembering Louis Stott, a much missed Veggies member, live exports campaigner, sanctuary volunteer & all round great guy, who we lost in 2016.

Jill Phipps

15 January 1964 – 1 February 1995

Jill PhippsExtract from A Personal Tribute To Jill Phipps:

“Jill was a beautiful young woman at the height of her powers who loved and cared for all life, at 31 she was much too young to die and I am sure she will always be remembered with love by everyone who had the privilege of meeting her.

When the earth has been ravaged and the animals are dying, a tribe of people from all races, creeds and colours will put their faith in deeds not words to make the land green again. They shall be known as The Warriors of the Rainbow, Protectors of the Environment.

Jill was one of those people.”

Vicki Moore

1955 – 2000

In 1987 Vicki rescued the donkey ‘Blackie’ from death in a fiesta in Spain. She discovered that there were many thousand Blood Fiestas.

In June 1995, whilst videoing ‘undercover’, in the village of Coria, Spain, Vicki was gored by a bull. She was tossed into the air 10 times, gored 11 times in the chest, back, groin and legs. She also suffered a punctured lung, 8 badly smashed ribs and the loss of a kidney.

Despite being in constant pain, Vicki continued to campaign for the animal until her death in 2000.

Mike Hill

Mike Hill

At 4.00 pm Saturday 9th February, 1991 Mike Hill became the first hunt saboteur to be killed whilst trying to protect wildlife. Mike was only 18 and for two years lived and breathed animal rights, not just dogs and cats but every living creature. He was a vegan, worked at both Heavens Gate Sanctuary and Freshfields Animal Rescue Centre and was an active sab with Yeovil sabs and Merseyside sabs.

Mike was too nice a person for this world. There was no hurt nor malice in his soul. He thought good of everyone and everything. He was quite, unassuming, softly spoken and gentle. He lived and died for his beliefs.

Gari Allen

Gari had been involved in the movement for well over 20 years, and was still very active on demos, stalls, meetings etc. He is without doubt the one person that we could say attended more events than anyone else we know!! Coach trips to events will never be the same again. He could almost invariably be seen at big marches shaking a tin raising money for Green Meadow Animal Sanctuary and selling purple lapel ribbons out of a bucket. In his home town of Coventry, he was heavily involved in cat rescue, neutering, rehoming etc.

When he died on 18th June 2006 the animals lost one of their greatest friends.

200 Leaflet VEGAN Challenge !

Many people only buy meat dairy and eggs because they are largely unaware of the extent of the suffering the animals used by these industries go through.Sadly through their blind consumption they are directly paying for terrible cruelty and suffering. Many people , if they simply knew the truth about these industries , would choose not to support them any longer.

As vegans we don’t personally take part in this suffering, but sadly it will continue to go on unless we take action and help spread the truth. Just by delivering a leaflet through someones door you potentially spare thousands of animals a lifetime of suffering , it is a hugely powerful thing to do.

So please take part in this challenge if you can ! Lets rise up together against the industry. BE THE CHANGE !

1.order leaflets using the links below. 200 is the target but please order more if you want to go the extra mile !
2. on 26th February deliver the leaflets in your local area. You can of course do it in the days before or after if 26th isn’t possible.
3. Post how many you delivered on this event. Include a photo or video if you like !

I have a video here on leafletting. The main tip would be to deliver in an area of terraced houses with small or no driveways, where you can get from each door to the next very quickly.

Here’s a compilation video of the last leaflet challenge

Click ‘going’ on the event to commit to taking part.

Its important we spread this event as far and wide as possible. So please share the event, and invite friends. To invite friends use the invite friends tool, click show more friends, choose friends and you can select from there. This is the easiest way to multiply your impact by getting others to take part. If you have a youtube channel or decent following id appreciate shouting out this event !

LEAFLET LINKS: It is up to you which ones to deliver, whether its egg , meat or dairy. VIVA leaflets cost a small fee which goes towards the amazing work they do. Animal aid ones are free. Viva leaflets may take 4/5 days to come so make sure you order in time !

Remembrance Day

Peace Dove“Whilst there are slaughterhouses, there will be battlefields” – Tolstoy

Throughout history, animals have suffered and died as a result of human conflicts.

Remember the animals with Animal Aid.Request their booklet Animals: The Hidden Victims of War.

Throughout the history of human conflicts, animals have been victims of war.

During World War I, dogs and pigeons were used to deliver messages between frontline trenches and further afield. Horses, donkeys and even elephants have been routinely used as beasts of burden, while a shocking array of animals – from bears to deer – have been kept as pets in the midst of battle.

Today, animals continue to be used in the battlefield to detect explosives, and thousands suffer and die each year in laboratories, infected with biological or chemical agents, or deliberately shot or otherwise damaged.

18 million horses killed in the First World War along with a quarter of a million pigeons, thousand of rats and hundreds of dogs. They did not give their lives, their lives were taken from them.

Animals in Wars past and present memorial on Remembrance Sunday 13th November at War Memorial Albion Gardens Place Ramsgate CT11 8HQ at 2pm. Please bring wreaths and flowers to honour our animal brothers and sisters slaughtered in human wars. Finish with meet up at Belgian Bar.

World Day for Animals in Laboratories

World Day for Laboratory Animals is a United Nations recognized day of international commemoration of the suffering and killing of millions of innocent sentient beings in laboratories throughout the world.

In the UK a march & rally will be held in Birmingham on Saturday 29th April

Campaigning organisations in the UK and across the globe, will mark World Day for Laboratory Animals, a time to reflect upon the pain and suffering caused to millions of animals all in the name of a fraudulent scientific practice – a practice that is not only is so cruel to the animals so horribly abused and killed by vivisectors but a practice that so cruelly gives false hope to those with illness and disease.

National Badger Week

The Badger Trust has decided to run a National Badger Week Campaign in 2016 from Saturday 25 June to Saturday 2 July.

By moving the campaign from a day to a week and into the Summer (outside of the expected period for badger culls) the Badger Trust anticipates that more Groups and supporters will be able to hold events across the UK.

National Badger Week will end with a family carnival march celebrating badgers in Stafford on Saturday 2 July.

Building on the success of 2015, Emily Lawrence will continue to act as a campaign event co-ordinator for National Badger Week in 2016.

If you would like to hold an event during National Badger Week please contact Emily Lawrence on 07702 646820 or emilyjlawrence@btinternet.com

Grand National Protest

Every year around 420 horses are raced to death in Britain, and thousands more are killed for meat.

Horses are abused by trainers and others in order to make them run as fast as possible, no matter the consequences to their health and happiness.

38 horses have died at Aintree since 2007.

Please DO NOT bet on animals’s lives. Betting income and racecourse attendance fees keep the racing industry in business.

Join the protest on Saturday 9 April at Aintree Racecourse, at the bottom of the walkway to Aintree Station, to show your opposition to the most notorious race in the country: the Grand National.

See also Animal Aid horse racing campaign pages and the list of all the horses killed at Aintree and other race courses since 2007 at Race Horse Death Watch.

Nottingham Animal Rights are holding a Grand National Stall on Thursday 7th April,  from 6:30pm outside Ladbrokes in Market Square and on Saturday 9th April will support the Grand National day of action with a protest from 1:00pm. Bring flyers, posters. If you’d like to order Animal Aid’s Sanctuary Not Cruelty leaflets to hand out in your town centre, please email Animal Aid.

Zoo Awareness Weekend

Every year our annual event to raise awareness of the plight of animals held captive in zoos takes place over Easter weekend 30th March to 2nd April. Will you join us?

What is wrong with zoos?

  • Animals are routinely culled in zoos, many of them healthy individuals who are no longer wanted by the zoo
  • Stereotypic behaviours are abnormal behaviours often exhibited by animals in zoos – pacing, rocking, swaying and even self-harming are all signs of stress commonly seen in captive animals
  • Even the best enclosures in zoos cannot replicate wild animals’ natural habitat – animals are forced to live in a different climate, habitat, unable to exhibit natural behaviours such as raising a family and foraging for food. Many animals would roam miles everyday in the wild which is simply impossible in zoos.
  • Our investigations into zoos have exposed neglect, ill animals left untreated, links with the animal circus industry, exposed festivals held in zoos causing animals stress, junk food fed to animals and much more.

Please join us in speaking up for the voiceless, the often forgotten animals who live a life so far from what they would live naturally in the wild.

Take action over Zoo Awareness Weekend!

  • Hold a demonstration at your local zoo! Contact campaigns@captiveanimals.org if you can organise one!
  • Distribute leaflets in your local area. Just contact us and we will send them out to you.
  • Hold a fundraising event to support our zoo campaigns
  • Take part in online actions over Easter weekend – we will be releasing details of these on our Facebook page
  • Write to your local paper about zoos
  • Hold an information stall in your town centre, local library or school
  • Volunteer on a street collection to raise funds. Contact Nicola@captiveanimals.org if you can hold one and we will help you organise it.
  • Keep an eye out for Easter petting zoo events and tell us if you see one advertised. Click here to report a mobile zoo and for more ideas on opposing mobile zoos see here
  • Oppose mobile zoo events on their event pages

These events can be held in your school, workplace, at home, with friends or on the streets in your town! If you want to get involved email campaigns@captiveanimals.org We will supply materials and support to make your event a meaningful one for the animals!

To get involved, organise an event and let us know or contact us to be put in touch with local campaign groups.
