Young Greens at Shut Down Yarl’s Wood #PeopleNotNumbers

Young Greens are supporting the Movement for Justice demonstration to surround Yarl’s Wood Immigration Detention Centre on the 18th November 2017.

This follows our attendance at the last demonstration in May 2017 in collaboration with our #PeopleNotNumbers campaign. Open to all Greens, Young and Old – please share and invite anyone who may be interested.

Time to build the Twelfth demonstration at Yarl’s Wood – lets shut down this racist, sexist hellhole once and for all!

In Yarl’s Wood 400+ women are indefinitely detained, most of whom have experienced rape, domestic violence, torture, forced marriage, sexual abuse, FGM, persecution due to sexuality. Many of whom have long and deep connections to the UK, have been here most of their lives, have all their family and friends here. Many have children; some are pregnant, elderly, disabled, sick and have mental health difficulties.

Yarl’s Wood has been exposed time after time in undercover investigations, government reports, inspectorate reports, and inquiry findings for sexual abuse/harassment by guards towards the women. Undercover footage by Channel 4 news showed the brutal, racist attitude of the guards.

This is part of our Young Greens #PeopleNotNumbers campaign. We aim to explore the different conceptions that people have about freedom of movement, and its importance in an increasingly changing world. We want to listen to refugees and migrants and empower them to protect and promote their human rights. And finally, we want to transform the attitudes of politicians, encouraging them to recognise migrants and refugees as real people with real stories, and not a simple statistic.

The Young Greens are advocating booking onto one of Movement for Justice’s coaches. They will be arranged from all areas of the country and can be easily booked by keeping an eye on Movement for Justice By Any Means Necessary’s event page here: https://www.facebook.com/events/262159867623100/

Once you have booked onto a coach, please email Hannah Graham at hannahg@younggreens.org.uk to let us know you are attending.

Rally: Stand Up To Racism, Refugees Welcome

Amid a vitriolic atmosphere of anti-migrant hysteria following the EU referendum, Prime Minister Theresa May has announced she will trigger article 50 by the end of March 2017 in order to “have the freedom to choose the way we control immigration.”

In a situation where migrants, Muslim women and anyone considered to be ‘foreign’ are being attacked on a daily basis and refugees are being abandoned by Britain and Europe to destitution, drowning and exploitation, there has never been a more important time in recent history to stand up to racism.

Join the Nottingham Stand Up To Racism rally to discuss how we can confront the rise in racism, Islamophobia and anti-Semitism
